Is it possible illness has stopped my milk supply?

I've been unwell for a few days now, had a temperature for four days and feeling generally under the weather. I think it's some kind of virus, there's been a bit of it about, kind of flu like. Anyway, my milk supply is really low, I'm feeding as much as ever, if not more, despite feeling really shitty. Can illness stop milk supply? DS is almost 10 months and I really wanted to bf him to at least year.

In my experience yes, Keep very well hydrated

bump

could it be mastitis?

JackieNo · 05/07/2008 21:55

Flu-like does sound a bit like mastitis, but you'd probably have a sore patch somewhere too. IME illness definitely can affect supply - will go back to normal once you're better, as long as you're feeding as much as ever, as you say you are.

I don't think it's mastitis... I've never had it so I'm not sure what it feels like, but I don't have any hot lumps on my boobs or anything. I think it is just a virus, but it's good to know that it might be affecting my supply. Not good exactly, but good to know there's a reason. It's hard but I'll have to keep on feeding. I was really worried I'd be depriving ds of important nutrition as he's really not getting much milk at all, but he's having plenty of water so I'm not worried about dehydration. Actually dehydration's probably more of an issue with me, I've been waking up with very dry eyes which is a sure sign I haven't had enough to drink. I guess having a temperature of over 100 for five days makes you a bit dehydrated!

Keep feeding on Demand and also snack on porridge or oat cakes as this will help naturally boost your supply again.

Got Milk

I've only got ready brek, is that ok? I can't quite bring myself to have a bowl now so I'll do it in the morning, will oatcakes do now? I've started taking fenugreek again too. It's really hard to know what on demand feeding is for a 10 month old. When they're tiny every time they cry I assume it's hunger (unless I know otherwise) but now ds is older it's much harder. I tend to feed him at set times rather than on demand ie before breakfast, in the afternoon and at bedtime.

Oh and I presume I shouldn't top up with formula either? I was worried he wasn't getting enough milk but he's had an oatibix with milk this morning, a yoghurt and some cheese so hopefully that'll compensate.
