Reflux or Overfed?

DC3 kept bringing up milk or cottage cheese like vomit after feed, after waking up from sleep, during changing nappies, despite I keep her up at least 30 mins and also wind her. She started getting quite fussy and screaming randomly as well when she’s not asleep or feeding. This has been particularly difficult for me at night recently as she just can’t sleep more than 1.5 hours, and as I hold her for 30 mins after feed, I only get 1 hour sleep… unless if I hold her or have her sleep on me then she can sleep up to 3 hours…

as my other DC didn’t have similar issue. I’m wondering if others experienced this and have any tips? I don’t know whether this is simply reflux or have I fed her too much? She’s exclusively breastfed but I have offered her boobs everytime she isn’t happy..

She is about 2.5 weeks old and is a big baby from birth

It’s pretty much impossible to over feed a breastfed baby, so I think you may need to discuss this with your HV.

It sounds pretty normal for a baby with reflux especially when so young. I had a big baby too and I genuinely think he was overfed as he was massive. In the first week a health visitor told me to tickle his feet to keep him feeding longer and that resulted in projectile vomit that ended us in A&E with him so didn't do that again! He also used to comfort suck a lot and was likely getting more calories when doing it.

For the reflux I had the same experience of holding him for 30 mins before lying down. I did manage to reduce this gradually so might be worth trying 25 mins, then 20, then 15 and just see what you can get away with. Putting DS down already asleep was the only option otherwise he'd puke.

Unlikely you’re overfeeding and at this age you should feed on demand.

Have a look at laid back breastfeeding and see if that helps any. It is a more upright feeding position and can aid reflux.

Also give the NCT infant feeding line or the national breastfeeding helpline a ring. Or get along to a breastfeeding support group with some qualified support. HVs and midwives are great but not a lot of them have any infant feeding / breastfeeding training.

Totally agree with this advice. I’d also have a look at the possibility of Tongue Tie as taking in air whilst BFing can cause the wind and crying that you’re experiencing. The sick could just be a coincidence. Some babies do just dollop a bit of vomit after feeds.
