Cows milk at 1 year. How much do I give him???

OK, another daft question from me! My ds is turning one in 6 weks and I have no idea about the transition to cows milk .

Currently, he has three 7 oz bottles of Farley's First formula a day. Do I just give him the same amount of cows milk in a day or do I need to cut his milk intake down?

Please explain! All my friends have put their babies on 'follow on' formula or 'growing up milk' but I haven't made the change. Please help!

I gradually switched over my DS - switched the day time one to cows milk then the morning one and finally the evening. I did it over a period of about two weeks. I have no idea if that's the right way to do it but my DS is thriving

My DD is just one and I started the change at 11 months. She's been having cows milk on weetabix since 6 months and then at 11 months, I changed her to one cows milk and one formula bottle a day (she has hers first and last thing). I still warm the cows milk slightly. I carried on doing this until I'd run out of formula (we used Farleys as well and didn't bother with the 2nd / follow-on milk)

HTH

Ah thanks spicemonster. I feel a bit nervous about it really. Does cows milk have enough nutrients in it to completely take the place of formula? Or will the solids he's on provid him with enough? I'm confused!

btw, DDs bottles are 7-8 oz each. If she doesn't want it, she doesn't drink it - she gets plenty of other dairy in her diet anyway

I do give him ABEDEC vitamin drops or whatever they're called as well once a day which is what the government recommends I think. I put them in his morning milk.

Thanks littlemissnorty. I wasn't sure whether to just make the change in one go but I see that both of you have substituted one bottle at a time. Excellent, now I know, thank you!

Just don't buy any more formula. Make sure you buy plenty of blue top milk - I'm getting though loads

violetsmile · 22/06/2008 21:38

Yes, I will do, I only get the blue topped anyway (anything remotely lower fat just isn't tastey!

I will look into the vitamin drops too. Can you tell he is PFB and I haven't a clue?!
