Natural Term Breastfeeding on This Morning

I watched this today. Apart from the typical annoyances, I heard Clare Byam Cook mention a study being done which is aiming to prove that extended bfing increases allergies as babies cannot develop their own immunity. I
thought she said the Leap study, but when I looked it up, that was a study about the prevention of peanut allergy in children and babies. Is this the right study, and if so, has anyone found the part about breastfeeding please? TIA!

Oh I totally agree. Little benefit after 6 months fgs? My 10 month might just be disagreeing with that! I know she talks bs, and so I wanted to see this study she was talking about, to see what it actually said. She seemed to be using it to prove her point against extended bfing, but it's not clear from what I can find that the study even talks about bfing.

I didn't see this programme.

Did CBC actually say there was little benefit to breastfeeding after 6 mths?

And did she actually use the LEAP study by name to suggest that bf longer than this might increase allergies?

Can someone confirm on both these points?

Yes - she said that exclusive breastfeeding and 'delayed weaning' (after 6 months, or after 4 months? Not clear) may increase the risk of developing allergies

I was also a bit as her suggestion that natural term breastfeeding should not be 'promoted' as it makes women who couldn't/can't BF feel guilty. OK then! ( again)

If that was the case surely it would follow that bf should never be promoted at all!!!

I thought she was absolutely awful apart from the bit about encouraging more mothers to BF and that MWs and BF counsellors should be doing more (or should there be more of them??).

Anyway can anyone tell me why mothers milk is fab up until 6 months then apparently it's not so good after this magic 6 months and all mothers should put their children onto milk from another species that is highly processed? Because that is what this woman was saying this morning.

She also said extended BFing was only for children from third world countries that have no access to clean drinking water oh and she has seen evidence from the US that teenagers were being BF.

This was in response to Stella Onions saying that at about 7 or 8 children lose the ability to suckle.

I loved when Phillip said "what is your 5yo's friends come over for tea and she is BFing? and Stella said "she's not BFing then she playing ponies, her children only feed mornings and evenings or when they are ill.

So in summary from the BF expert, you are only allowed to BF your baby up until 6 months then stop as you don't live in a third world country and if you don't your child will have more allergies and want fed as a teenager!

She said something like, a study is currently underway which is suggesting that extended breastfeeding can increase the risk of allergies due to children not being able to develop their own immune system. Then she said it is a very well known study, the Leap study. I have look all over their website, and cannot find anything referring to breastfeeding. Is this bolleaux then?

I know extended breastfeeding is good, btw, intend to do it myself with 10 month old dd. Just wondering why she referred to this study. And why she thinks bfing after 6 months gives little to the baby.

Natural term breastfeeding is allowing your child to self-wean, that is, they decide when to stop bfing.

Ah thank you... I kind of thought that's what it was, just never heard the phrase before. Was confusing that and extended bf.

That study got quite a bit of publicity at the time, witchand....from memory and without checking back, I recall it did not control for exclusive breastfeeding, and for the fact that atopic families may have deliberately bf for longer (in which case you might see an increase in atopy because of heredity - the old 'reverse causation' research error).
