Will expressing my let down cause an over supply?

Hi

I previously posted about forceful let down and baby choking on milk. Background info: It’s making feeding miserable, baby will fall cough, choke, causes a poor latch, wind, reflux and will eventually asleep due to tiredness or frustration meaning they’re not getting enough. I’ve tried different positions with no luck.

Anyway! I’ve found that if I hand express or use my Hakka to catch just my let down (so until it stops spraying), baby feeds MUCH better and for longer as they’re not edge used from the let down. I don’t express for longer than a few minutes and I get 0.5 - 1oz max.

Will this affect my supply? I really don’t want an oversupply. And will a manual pump make this worse? (Again, just to catch the let down).

thanks in advance

I shouldn’t think so. Your baby is growing and your milk supply fluctuates all the time based on a number of things including what your baby needs.

FWIW, I expressed a full feed every 1-2 days so DH could also feed him. You can freeze the milk, too.

Do what you need to do for now to establish feeding. Baby will also get stronger and more experienced and may soon be able to deal with the let down on their own.

Good luck!

@ALittleDropOfRain thank you! Yes I’m hoping baby will grow to manage the let down but for now just need a way to ensure she’s taking enough milk!

This should be fine. I was advised to do this for my forceful letdown, but I catch it in a muslin if I have one nearby.

Baby is now 12 weeks and is handling the forceful letdown slightly better if I just put a bit of pressure on the top of my boob to slow the flow.

It has been a right nightmare though!!
