Choking whilst breastfeeding

Hi

I’m EFB my 3 week old, in the last week she seems to be struggling whilst feeding. She will pull of, cry, flail her arms, cough and choke. Today she choked enough where she appeared to stop breathing, very briefly. She would just to latch back on after this, but I’m finding in the last few days she’s giving up and just falling asleep instead. I’m worried she will end up developing an aversion.

I’m assuming this could be fast let down however she will do this throughout the feed (not just at the start) a sometimes it stops and re starts and other feeds it doesn’t happen at all. When she pulls off, sometimes her mouthful of milk will spill out. When she pulls off there is no spray which makes me question if it is the let down? (When I hand express it does spray though).

I’ve tried reclined position, scissor hold and hand expressing a bit into a muslin however it doesn’t help. I’m reluctant to pump before each feed as I don’t want to encourage an oversupply.

she is a bit refluxy, putting on weight fine but haven’t weighed her since this begun.

Any suggestions?

Hi lovely, fellow breastfeeding new mum here 👋🏻

Is she latching properly? My LO wasn’t and he was struggling with reflux and gagging occasionally because of it.

it’s scary when they go very quiet and don’t appear to be breathing!

She’s still very small and breast feeding is exhausting for them. Do you have any support from the hospital, like a feed specialist or a HV who you could ask for some support?

@MissSold hey! 👋

Thank you! She is latching properly, what’s weird is she’s been latching a lot better more recently and we didn’t have this issue when her latch was poorer.

There are some feeding clinics near me which im planning on visiting, I’ll get them to double check the latch too!

Good luck! I hope you get it resolved and peace of mind soon. X

I had something similar and a peads doctor was very adamant it was about burping the baby more - I was never sure about it though.
I hope you get the answers you need x

It might be worth trying a nipple shield to see if that helps? They can slow the flow a little bit and help your baby to control it a bit better while they are still learning to suck then swallow without getting too much? X
