Struggling FTM

I am a FTM. My baby is just under 5 weeks old. For the past week or so he has been struggling to stay asleep. He will fall asleep on me, but as soon as he’s lay flat he makes loud grunting noises. Sometimes they wake him up but sometimes he stays asleep. He goes red in the face sometimes and occasionally goes rigid and pulls his legs up. He has struggled to bring up wind for a while now. We have tried infacol and now we are trying gripe water. The noises he makes sound really uncomfortable for him and I’m worried he’s in pain. I have a doctors appointment scheduled for Monday too.
he’s having lots of broken sleep because of this.

Bless you, it can be so worrying, all the weird noises babies make! It’s probably just wind/colic/reflux/digestive rumblings. Do you have a sling or carrier he could have a nap in? Sometimes being upright can help. You can also try propping up one end of the cot or using a wedge pillow under the mattress. And another thing to try is cycling his legs and then pressing them up to his tummy to try and release the wind! Lots of videos of how to do this online!

It does sound pretty normal unless he’s crying in pain.

Agree with propping up the top part of his crib a little. If you have a DH/DP you could also try using a T-shirt they have work as the sheet. This gives it a nice reassurance HV smell and usually helps them settle into a deeper sleep.

If he’s struggling with wind, are you BFing or FFing? If you’re FFing you could try adding Dentinox to the bottles or swapping formulas?

If you think it’s wind have you tried the Tiger in the Tree hold?

Getting them in a sling as the PP suggested is also a good idea. Something about the gentle compression and movement seems to help with wind.

If you think it might be something more though, has Tongue Tie been ruled out?
