Vegemite for baby, who's right?

Australian friend has a baby boy, 7 months, and her DH wants to start him on Vegemite, "just a little smear on bread and butter".

She thinks it's too salty for a baby and doesn't want him getting a taste for overly salty food at that age. I'm inclined to agree although I keep my nose out of it.

Who's right, who's wrong?

Far too salty

CharnwoodFire · 12/12/2025 20:03

Meh - both of you? It won't be great for the child but a small smear once won't harm. And it's good to give them a range.

Too salty for a young weaning baby. Also they’ll hate it - better to do Vegemite & cheese pastry spirals when they’re a bit older to get them hooked!

Tragically my 3yo DS hates it.

We use the salt reduced Vegemite which tastes the same with lower sodium content.

Wait until they get to 1 and mainline olives!!

It’s fine. It’s a smear. Atleast toast the bread though! Mine loved marmite and olives by 1 and still do now.

Is it salty, yes. Is one smear with some butter that gets licked/smushed about going to make a big impact on daily salt intake? No. I couldn’t get that worked up about a bit of Vegemite on toast!

Cat1504 · 12/12/2025 20:54

It’s fine….all 3 of mine had it from 6 months

BeanQuisine · 12/12/2025 23:40

Thanks people. It does sound safe enough as an occasional little smear. 😋

Love Vegemite myself (and olives, and anchovies etc.) but I definitely do overdo my salty food intake at times.

I gave mine Marmite from 6 months, only a scrape and she'd only actually eat some of the toast. It's much better than sugary spread like jam.

It's fine. DC was a Marmite baby!
