HELP advice on coping with incredibly hungry excl b/f 4 month old....

ds2 is nearly 4 months old, excl b/f, first 3 months he was feeding every 2 hours during the day, then 7pm, 3am, 6am overnight.

he is on the very large end of the scale - was 9.5lbs at birth and now weighs 19lbs.

last few weeks he is now needing extra feeds overnight (7pm, then 2 hourly from midnight onwards, in fact last night he just slept in bed with me and fed pretty much constantly from midnight onwards). during the day i am now having to feed hourly.

no problem with milk supply but i am knackered, and had thought that by now i might be getting a bit MORE sleep rather than less and less.

ds1 had been weaned onto formula and 3 meals a day by this point, but am keen to carry on b/f for at least 6 months this time, and to do baby led weaning.

he doesn't seem interested in food so reluctant to start him on anything solid.

he won't drink EBM or formula from a bottle, and has only managed a couple of sips from a cup.

is there an end in sight? am starting to feel a bit helpless and overwrought...

he's feeding a lot to build up your supply ready for the massive growth spurt they have at 4 ish months. it is difficult because it throws out the comfy routine you had got used to. but that's all it is. no need for solids.

VictorianSqualor · 09/06/2008 12:25

Possibly a growth spurt.
Sorry to say but it is perfectly normal to feed this often at his age.

You're definitely doing the right thing not contemplating solids yet, it probably wouldn't affect his sleep pattern anyway.

There is an end insight, unfortunately no-one can say when that is!

I'd suggest keeping him in bed with you whilst he is feeding that much though, did you get any sleep last night?

LadySanders · 09/06/2008 12:27

ah ok, growth spurt fair enough. i'm keeping him in bed with me from once he wakes up at midnight as at least that way he can help himself, as it were. but not getting much sleep which unhelpful as am working part time (baby comes with me, not ideal...) and trying to renovate a house and look after a 7 year old etc etc...

I have to say it sounds completely normal - both of mine have done this at around 4 months.

yes, growth spurt. Hellish, but it will pass. Hang in there and get as much rest as you can

fab, v reassuring thank you!
