If 8 month DS is allowed baby ibuprofen, why can't I take ibuprofen and then breast-feed him?

Simple question really!

DS is now back to his normal perky self, but has given me his baby-man flu and I feel awful. Paracetamol is not really taking the edge off it and I was wondering if he is allowed to have baby ibuprofen himself, does anyone know the reasons why I can't have ibuprofen while breast-feeding?

The joys of motherhood, any other job I would be tucked up in bed, but with DS and 4 yr old DD I have to somehow keep going!

Thanks for any advice.

you can take nurofen while feeding!
just not while pregnant

but not decongestants sorry...

You absolutely can have ibuprofen when breastfeeding. It is just a blanket statement on the packet that says you can't. There is plenty of evidence out there to say it is safe and infact it is the drug of choice for initial treatment of mastitis

oh thank you!!!! I'll go and buy some now while we go shopping!

I hate taking drugs while still feeding him, but sometimes you just have to, don't you!

i put of taking drugs for 13 mths I had severe SPD and nerve pain
I should have taken them...
I did 3 weeks ago and my life is a revelation

Piffle - you poor girl! I'm glad you're getting some relief now. I suffered bad SPD with both my pregnancies, so have a vague idea how awful it could get.

Well, I've taken my tablets, feel a bit like I've taken something illegal - with 2 mcs, I've been pg or breast-feeding for the best part of the last 2 years, so haven't taken anything stronger than paracetamol in that time! Wish I'd got some lucozade to wash it down with now though, have to make do with a very rare full-fat coke!

It is a 'licence' issue rather than a real one, IYSWIM. THey cannot do clinical trials of BF women, for all sorts of ethical resasons. So they have to put the disclaimer on the packet

Pretty much most drugs are safe when breastfeeding, generally it's only the really strong ones that would have to be prescribed by a consultant (like those for someone with severe mental health problems who can't function without them) that aren't safe. Most GPs will tell you it's not because it would come back on them if there was a problem - real or perceived.
