How can I stop my 4 month old biting me to show he has finished?

My 4 month old has just got 2 front bottom teeth through and when he doesn't want any more breastmilk, he bites me. I frown and say no, and take him off, then burp him, change sides, or stop etc. He does smile if I get too animated so I just say it firmly. But I fear that what he is learning is that when he's finished he should bite to let me know that he doesn't want to feed anymore.

How can I stop this vicious cycle? I'm 100% committed to BFing exclusively til 6 months and will continue until 12 months alongside BLW- I don't want to change my plans just because of teeth emerging early!

In order to bite you, he more-or-less has to shift his latch (because of where his teeth and tongue go when properly latched). If you watch out for it carefully, you should be able to spot/feel him shifting the latch and take him off before he bites. DS would also get a kind of a glint in his eyes just before biting that I learned to recognise.

The other thing you could do is when he bites say no very firmly and immediately put him down for thirty seconds or so -- not carry straight on to burping or changing sides.

That's really useful, thanks, I'll try to spot it! My worry that he's going to bite me could well inhibit my flow even if I want to persevere so I know I have to sort it out!
