Severe pain in right breast - Advice please.

Hello all,

I have been bf dd2 for last 18months, over the past 2-3 weeks my right nipple has just become unbearably painful, if i accidentally knock or tap it the pain is awful and when my dd2 latches on in brings water to my eyes for the first at least 5 secs then it is fine. However I continue to get just general discomfort and shooting pains from this right boob. The left one is fine and dandy.

I wanted to bf until 24mnths but am considering calling time because i cant bear it.

I have tended to feed more on the left side, will this cause any problems at all, non-even boobed feeding?!

I should mention that my boob looks fine, no redness, discharge, lumps or bumps, it looks the same as usual.

Could it be thrush? Had similar pains when dd gave me thrush after antibiotics.

shooting pains after feeding could be thrush. It is also possible you have a blocked duct - though if you've not been feeding as much and there is no swelling it sounds unlikely as there often is...

I think you should call a BF counsellor before you decide to give up as it may be something easily resolvable. if your GP is BF friendly they may be able to help if it's thrush but unfortunately many don't believe you can get it in the nipples/breast... Does you baby have any symptoms: red chafed bottom? white spots inside mouth? perhaps pulling away from the breast?

is it also possible you could have some damage or cracking on the nipple that you can't actually see?

dd's are not displaying any signs of thrush...

been gp's this morn, he prescribed Nurofen, after me reminding him that i have asthma he prescribed what i beleive he said was Codomol or something similar, i wont collect it, I dont want to mask the symptoms I want to fix the cause.

he suggested that i take pain relief for a month!! and if no change come back for a blood test. I've never seen this GP in my life, my usual was away but I'll be going back next week to discuss with usual doctor.

Guess i'm slightly worried its...

oh btw i called a few bf counsellors, they all said its not likely to be bf related.
