Ulcers

Hi everyone

I need a bit of help and advise please.

My 10months old had a fever for two days during which she was refusing to feed, fevers gone now and i was hoping she would be better but i discovered a mouth ulcer in the roof of her mouth. So the fever must have also been linked.
she is exclusively bf, hardly eats any solids despite multiple and different attempts (before she got ill). So anyway because im her only source of food she would drink regularly, like every two hours or so. Since the mouth ulcer appeared shes been having milk (and milk only) once every 5/6 and once even 10hrs!!

We’re flying to go on holiday on Monday and honestly im panicking so much about this situation. I just dont know what to do on a long journey with a baby that isnt eating anything and refusing breast. Another issue here is also my boobs! They are super engorged and painful 😥

i was wondering if you can give me some advise on things i could use that would help her please.

p.s 1 ive been using anbesol but it does nothing.

P.s 2 im not worried about dehydration too much because despite the little amount of food she has she continues to have wet nappies and has even pooped. Shes also taking very small sips of water which I make a point of being on top of during the day.

Are you giving paracetamol along with the anbesol? That might help?

And have you tried having a bath with her? Sometimes you being naked with her might encourage a feed.

If those two things aren’t working I woukd ring 111 Flowers

Sorry forgot about your engorgement. Have you tried some hand expressing so that you’re more comfortable?

Thank you for your reply 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I feel sad reading about my original post because things have changed loads since.
I went from being engorged to now my supply dramatically dropping.
shes now eating and drinking which is great but refusing to bf. She goes on the breast, puts it in her mouth but doesnt drink anything! Im now wondering whether this is goodbye for our bf journey or if she will eventually drink again. Im really heartbroken as I really am not ready to end our bf journey yet

She may drink again. I’d give one of the BFing Helplines a call in the morning to talk everything through with one of the BFCs. They may be able to suggest a couple of things that might help to get her back feeding.

They will also be able to talk to you about how you’re feeling. Do you have the numbers?

Ah @Hanbah something similar happened to a friend at a similar age and it was the end of BF. In some ways she was glad as she never had to wean and it happened naturally but she also felt sad that it was abrupt! If you want to continue I’d just keep offering the breast before anything else but if she’s happy don’t stress.

Hanbah · 06/04/2025 21:27

@4pmwinetimebebeh oh really? I hope this isnt the end our journey. Mine is suuuuper unhappy. She really wants to feed again but doesnt know how to without pain

Poor thing, that’s awful! I’d be overlapping Calpol and Nurofen, she needs the pain reducing ASAP so she is able to feed. You run the risk of this affecting your milk supply otherwise. And try a range of feeding positions. I assume you’ve been to GP? What have they advised?

LuluDelulu · 07/04/2025 07:27

Also express a little off before she feeds as it’s harder to latch on engorged breasts and this may be worsening the issue.

I thought to update this thread for anyone who might at some point encounter a similar problem.

My baby went on a nursing strike for almost a week. She first started taking milk once at night from one breast and then slowly built that up. After a week we are back to normal feeds.

At some point I was sure this was the end of our bf journey because she was eating and drinking without any issues and the ulcers had disappeared but she was refusing breast.

During that week I was pumping and I made sure to offer boob at times I would have done before she got ill.
