ds is bottle fed anf for the last 3 days has been fussing at the bottle, but not all the time, its weird.

he will happily take the night and early morning feeds but when i try and feed during the day he either crys asoon as the bottle goes in his mouth or he takes a few ounces before he starts. he also arches his back and struggles like mad, if i try and encourage him to keep feeding he gets more and more distressed.

he has also started sleeping badly and is impossible to settle, he used to be so good and would sleep through the night.

other things he's been doing in the last few days are chewing his hands and drooling lots, somtimes with milk in it.

what could be causing this? a phase? teething? some kind of reflux?

help!

My DS started fussing at feeds around this age- and I also found the night feeds easier. In my limited experience (DS is now 12wks) when my DS is arching his back I stop feeding and wind him and I usually get a big burp! I also find feeds easier if done in a calm environment without distractions. It might be because they are getting older and noticing things around them more. Good Luck!

it sounds like your ds is teething, my ds started snack eating on the bottle at this age and he still does now at 8 months. He tends to take 2-3 ounces at a time. If thats all he wants just go with the flow.

Try some nelsons teething granules and some calgel on his gums before a feed and see if that helps.

Also just keep an eye out for which position you feed him in, he may just be a bit uncomfortable and want to change. He'll be fine

p.s i realise i have answered all of your current threads-i promise i'm not stalking you sounds from the other thread though like you have a very clever wee boy

Yeah def have experiences v similar to supercherry, my ds is 10wks and has just started the backarching/fussing thing. Usually resolves when he brings wind up (if in middle of feed) but if at start of feed is usually because of distractions/overexcitement - he seems less able to block out background stimuli these days. If I calm him by rocking etc he is usually fine.

He is also drooling and chewing hands a lot, bizarrely, but I don't think that's connected to the feeding issues.

sounds like maybe teething.Like said already three cheers for teething granules for teeth or general crabiness at bedtime...

It won't mess up my supply will it?

bearmama · 03/05/2008 16:17

Sounds like wind, this is what my DD does, hands in mouth, arches back, squeals. If she doesnt bring up wind I cuddle her and gently swing her round for a bit till she either burps or calms down.
AIDTR - if you are worried about your supply maybe try expressing?

I have exactly the same problem with my dd3. She cries for food, I manage to get the bottle in with alot of persuassion and distraction techniques, she will take a couple of ounces then start arching her back. Even if I get a burp out of her she will refuse any additional milk.

I had the same problem with dd2, she ended up in hospital being tubefed as she was only taking 12 to 15 ounces of milk a day. I am petrified dd3 will do the same thing. I had to wean dd2 at 13 weeks as she was almost starving herself. The paeds were useless!, I never managed to get a proper diagnosis. They tested her for milk allergy, reflux, cystic fibrosis and other genetic disorders but all tests came back negative.

Its bizarre, babies are supposed to love milk?? obviously mine don't.
