Pics of Nipple Warning! Day 3 of breastfeeding and have this on one breast

I wasn’t able to breastfeed DS as he had tongue tie and just wouldn’t latch.

DD who is 3 days old got the latch straight away. Is great at feeding and seems the latch is fine (asked at hospital and at my day 2 midwife appointment).

Right side breast - don’t feel any pain at all.
left side - I am in so much pain when she first latches and is sucking is abit painful too (not as much as the latch though).

What is it? Is it just a sore? I’m putting on lanisoh etc but it doesn’t seem to be healing. What shall I do? I dread when she has to go on that side and I want this to be a enjoyable experience as so far I love it.

I had some nipple shields from last time that I tried to use today but she absolutely screamed. But they are the large size so I may buy some small one and see if that helps?

I have a midwife appointment tomorrow too so I’ll ask her to check.

Unfortunately the photo is far too zoomed in and has pixelated on my phone. However I would assume it's either broken skin or a blister. Can you show the health visitor? Or go to a local pharmacy?

Can’t really see from the photo but just be aware with the lansinoh that the lanolin can provoke skin irritation and make matters worse, so I would be tempted to give that a swerve.

Hopefully this is better

I thought that was what I was seeing. My nipples went like that (same circumstances as you too with babies 1 and 2). Baby might know how to latch, my 2nd did too immediately, but it doesn't mean she doesn't have a tongue tie. Or it could simply be your nipples (not sure which it was for me, we got the tongue snipped on day 4).

For me, nipple shields helped with the toe curling pain of the initial latch, and it took about 2 weeks and then was suddenly healed. Mine were weeping and bleeding a bit too. I used lanolin and generic nipple cream, apparently keeping it wet (and with some breastmilk dabbed in) helps it heal faster.

Good luck, definitely speak with HV and midwives.

Looks like a wound. I had this on both nipples from tongue tie - no one checked for 3 weeks despite DD struggling to gain weight and by then the damage was done. Unfortunately they can take a while to heal. As PP said, try to keep the wound moist with breast milk/lanolin. If you harvested colostrum and have some left in the freezer try that too. I also used hydrogel breast discs from Amazon (will link below) which really helped the healing process. Just have to wash nipples after use before feeding. I would recommend attending any breastfeeding clinic in your area so they can confirm latch is fine and any tongue tie. Midwives can only do so much and told me my DD was fine for ages until we went to the clinic and she was immediately diagnosed with tongue tie.

Hang in there! You’re doing great and it will get easier.

The other breast is fine and doesn’t hurt at all so could it be tongue tie?
I think when I was collecting colostrum last week, I think I irritated it then.
I used some nipple shields today but she was choking on it. The nipple bit is massive compared to my nipple so I’m not sure how she would take to it?

Aw mine got really scabby and sore too! I also hammered the lasinoh and it did pass. My sister gave me some little silver caps for wearing between feeds and they were a life saver! Kept from getting friction against my bra/shirts and meant they could soak in the cream

Fipfop · 15/11/2024 20:26

You can buy silver cups. You put them onto your nipple between feeds. They collect a little milk in them which helps to heal. I found these helped it to heal so much faster than just lanolin.

How will it heal if baby still drinks from it? 😣

Ouch, you poor thing. I would also recommend the silver shields, they really helped my nippples to heal when I was struggling with feeding. Could you pump on that side and feed on the other side for a while to give it a chance to heal? It's amazing how quickly they can get better with the silver shields, even a day could make a difference.

The Multi-Mam wet compresses are a godsend for this. Whenever you aren't feeding, have them on or make sure they are slathered in cream to keep them moist. I had this with both nipples and it is very painful, I ended up expressing for some feeds for a few days to help them heal, but as DD2 grew and her latch improved and she got a bit stronger, they were able to heal. Just keep them moist and don't let them dry and crack

Try to make sure you keep them clean too. I ended up with a breast abscess as they think bacteria got in via the wound. Do not recommend!

These are the things. They aren't cheap but they are amazing.

By the time I was getting to the next feed it had pretty much healed. They are amazing.

I also used a nipple shield when things got really sore, found a cheap supermarket own one to be the best for baby latching on.

WonderingWanda · 15/11/2024 22:18

Mine did that too. Get some smaller nipple sheilds. Try feeding from one side only each feed for a day or two to give each nipple a longer break. Maybe if baby hates the nipple sheilds do a quick feed with a nipple sheild on one side. Next feed do the sale the other side. Third feed to a longer feed with no sheild and 4th same on other side. Also stop the nipple creams and try and get some air to them. I think it was the constant moisture that mine couldn't handle.
