Cat among the pigeons - What formula for a 5 month old?

Not for me, clearly, but a friend.

What formula to move her baby on to - or are they pretty much the same?

Don't ask why - don't judge... this isn't up for debate. It needs doing and I just want to help

i used sma gold when she was young as they have lcp's or something in that is in breast milk have changed to hipp organic now as they have a night time drink that is more filling and she started to get unsettled at night even though she already had started solid foods

Hey Lewis! i used Aptamil when i had to change to formula at 6mths, sma didn't go down too well with my lo. And obviously there's diff ones depending on how 'hungry' the baby is. Good luck to your friend and noone should be judging or debating on a question like this anyway, everyone's sitch is different!

first one to try is whichever she can get in the local 24h garage so she doesn't run out at 3am...

Alambil · 26/04/2008 11:21

lol good point Mrs Badger!

I only said it's no up for debate to stop the whole "has she seen a counsellor/done this/done that" typing... thought I'd save you all the effort

I guess it's a matter of elimination then - depending on what baby likes.

Pretty sure my DS was on SMA gold/white during his life... can't remember lol

I used Aptamil when breastfeeding went pear-shaped.

A health visitor told me it was closer to breast milk than the other formulas, not so stodgy, I think.

I don't know how accurate this advice was but, having expected the contents of the nappies to turn brown, solid and foul-smelling, as I had read would be the case with formula, I was pleasantly surprised to find no change.

And you can get it already made up in cartons now, very handy for emergencies.

It is fairly pointless to criticise failed breastfeeders. In my experience, we're pretty good at beating up ourselves.

mymblemummy - HVs and midwives often recommend Aptamil, but it's because they have been marketed to, pretty intensively!

Aptamil is no better and no worse than any other formula

There is no difference in the 'stodginess' betwween formulas - they all have more or less the same calorie content and more or less the same fat content. This is laid down in law.

The softer poos you describe are common to many formulas these days - a result of the addition of prebiotics.

When I had my first child, 9nearly 20 yeats ago now) we used to put them on cows milk at 6 months back then!

Divvy · 26/04/2008 19:00

That was ment to say

I used sma gold for dd 4 years ago and she was ok on it although her poos were quite firm (has no prebiotics). I used aptamil for ds (18 months) and he was fine on that although I did swap to Cow and Gate later on as it was a bit cheaper and he was ok on that too.
