Struggling with breastfeeding and sleep

My DD is 12w old, exclusively breastfed.

Shes always slept badly in the day, but used to sleep pretty well at night, an initial stretch of 3-5 hours and then would sleep 1-2 hour stretches until morning, I felt fine with getting that first little chunk.

All of a sudden, about 10 days ago, she started sleeping really badly at night too. Initial stretch of 1.5-2.5 hours then waking up every 0-1.5 hours. She still sleeps badly during the day too - contact naps only, 10-20 mins at a time, the odd two hour one every few days.

I can only get her to fall asleep by feeding her or she’ll nod off in the car.

She feeds all the time, usually about 40 mins a time but can be longer and I’m lucky if I get an hour in between feeds.

I’ve had latch checked multiple times, tongue tie cut at 3w, plenty of wet and dirty nappies, she comes off the breast in her own time seemingly content, she’s happy, alert and very active in between feeds.

Shes also not gaining weight very well, she’s tall (95th percentile) but weight is only 8th percentile. She was 65th for weight at birth. She gains every week but just not much.

i don’t know what to do, i feel like im failing her. Health visitor wants to come early and GP rang me and said I need to take her in to see them after HV appointment.

It's all pretty normal but if she isn't gaining get support from gp and hv and from breastfeeding consultants there's breastfeeding helplines. Good luck x

How much is she gaining per week OP?

watermelonsugarr · 13/09/2024 11:49

Really normal. We survived by cosleeping - game changer!

Sounds very much like my first who we later discovered had Tongue tie.

Does what's happening sound anything like what is described here?

Do you think that seeing a Lactation Consultant that specialises in TT would help?

If you haven't tried already, you could try some Breast Compressions Flowers
