My 11 week old dd is exclusively BF and we were managing okay after a difficult start but finding things really tough now. She was 3 weeks early and only 5lbs 4oz - it took a while to get started with feeding so she got very jaundiced and had a short spell in SCBU. Since then we've been ok apart from a fussy spell at 6 weeks. Her weight gain's been fine and she's now up to about 10lbs.

For the last 10 days or so she's been feeding hungrily for about 10 - 15 mins before coming off. If I burp her and try to get her to feed again she screams the place down.

I tried not feeding again but I still felt very full and she only lasted about 2hrs between feeds and I got mastitis.

For the last week I've tried to burp her for longer and then feed again. If I can get her to feed again she will take another 10 mins at least and last about 4 hrs. But she is getting worse - just cradling her near my breast starts a screaming fit. Sometimes she'll feed more if I stand up and bounce her while keeping her upright (not a position I seen recommended in any of the literature!). She seems hungry for more than just the initial 10 mins or so but it's getting to the point where each feed just ends up with both of us in tears.

Any advice gratefully received.

If she only weighs 5lbs 4oz, her stomach must be tiny - I think 2 hour gaps between feeds may well be normal for her.

Are you sure she needs burping? (Not all BF babies do, ime.)

Have you tried offering the other side right away when she comes off?

didn't expect such a speedy response!

She was feeding for about 25 mins I think

Just wanted to add that my ds who is 12weeks feeds for about 10 minutes, sometimes less and the longest he has gone between feeds during the day is 2 hours, it can be 1.5 hours sometimes - this is just the way he is. The upside of this is that he is good at night, I dreamfeed him at 10pm and then he wakes up on his own once. I can live with feeding every hour or so during the day for that!1
