Are fenugreek etc a temporary or permanent boost to supply?

I was prescribed domperidone to try to boost my supply in case that was a reason for dd's slow weight gain, but I didn't notice any difference with it, except for it giving me a dodgy tummy! So I'm now taking one of these herbal blends of fenugreek, blessed thistle etc, and think I notice quite a difference - certainly dd's weight has started to really pick up. What I'm wondering is do I need to keep on taking it? Should I be concerned re any adverse effect to dd? kellymom says if you can smell it in your sweat and milk then you are taking enough, I can def smell it during night feeds. But if I stop now will my supply decrease? DD is 17weeks and ex-bf but we had loads of weight gain probs at the start, and I don't think bf-ing was established well in the early days at all, I feel like my supply is "set" at low!
