Infant feeding

Sore right side

I'm currently EBF my 13 week old daughter and all has gone well so far. This morning I woke up with an incredibly sore right boob, definitely not engorged and can't feel any lumps in it to massage out. No idea what's happened but it feels like someone has punched it. She's been feeding as normal from it. Doubt it's mastitis as I feel absolutely fine, just wondered if anyone had any similar experiences?

I get this occasionally (currently bf my 5 month old and have had it 4 times so far, had the same with my older daughter too). I am always worried it might turn into mastitis so my action plan is always:

  1. feed as much as possible from that side
  2. check v carefully for any blocked ducts on the nipple (can be teeny tiny white dots)
  3. hand express (gently) massaging that area a bit if I can feel any milk left (ideally in the shower!)
  4. ibuprofen to reduce swelling and ensure milk can flow
  5. hot water bottle if really sore

I’ve just based this off tips from friends and mumsnet, but it always seems to clear in a day or so. Good luck!
