WHY?

I absolutely fucking dread feeding my 1yo, every few months we go through a phase of gagging and vomiting at least once a day if not more for about 2weeks. It’s absolutely drives me insane because I can’t seem to find any support or advice on how to stop this. He finishes a meal and I’m like omg yes he kept it down. Nope! The vomit literally is the whole meal and comes out of his nose and everything! I often think why do I bother feeding you. I’ve tried smaller amounts I’ve tried blending it up more because he still isn’t even eating finger foods or anything it’s driving me mad I want to send him back till this is over. I know it’s not his fault and it’s just something I have to live with till it passes but wow!

Your child has been vomiting daily for weeks and you're angry at him? What?

Flowermoon90 · 09/03/2024 18:51

Hi there
Have you tried talking to a doctor? I don't think it is normal to vomit every time he eats solid food.

BurbageBrook · 09/03/2024 18:52

OP, this is extremely concerning and not normal for a child of this age. Have you been to see a doctor?

KoalaPineapple · 09/03/2024 18:55

Please contact your HV or GP they can refer you to people who can help with this! Do it tomorrow ☺️

Theonethatswears90 · 09/03/2024 19:02

I never said I was angry with him! The situation makes me frustrated for obvious reasons. But cheers for your lovely support hun!

We have contacted a doctor when this has happened before they gave us reflux medication but it didn’t work. I don’t believed it’s reflux or it would happen all the time it’s not every meal just one or two meals a day he gags and then it all comes up. And it comes every 3months or so it’s not constant. I’m phoning the doctor again on Monday because so far this week we’ve only had 1 day with no vomit. I’m so full of emotions I just don’t know what to do for the best with him.

Start a food diary - he might be allergic to something

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/03/2024 19:08

I think it could be when he is having a growth spurt. There is a little valve to the entrance of our stomachs and if he grows, the valve may not have caught up yet and this would allow the contents of his tummy to come back up.

Whatever he throws up I can guarantee there will still be something in his tummy so please don't think there's no point bothering!!
It'll be horrible for him too.

no the poor little guy feels very sorry for himself when it happens we often cry together 😩 but it does pass it’s just I worry that it’ll harm him when in reality I know it won’t it’s just scary not knowing how long it’s going to last.

Yes I can imagine it is difficult.
We did have the kind of thing with our first son. He did seem to suffer from silent reflux which got better at 9m and then each month after. But there was definitely a regression of it when we thought he'd had a growth spurt.

So as other posters have said, it would be a good idea to keep a food diary just to see if there is a link there. But I think it'll get better in time

StealthMama · 09/03/2024 19:25

We'll look, a child vomiting 6 out of 7 days isn't normal. So start a record and speak to GP on Monday like you said.

He won't be getting enough nutrients and that does need attention until it's solved.

Wow, it seems so difficult to handle.
I hope the doctors can come up with something.
Maybe antacids might help.
I can only imagine the little guy feels terrible. Throwing up is no fun. :(

My nephew was a regular vommitter until he was about 7. Anything could set him off. Food, watching something grim (my sons eating using BLW with food everywhere 😂), smells. Gp always said he just had a sensitive gag reflex probably vommited at least twice a week for years. Was a nightmare at school if happened to vom there as then he would have to be off for 2 days his attendance record was awful. It kinda went away on its own

Raccaccoonie · 09/03/2024 21:19

Didn't mean to be unsupportive but your OP had no relevant information describing what was happening, previous doctor opinion etc, but as it did have you saying "why bother feeding him" you can hopefully see why I found that alarming.

I hope you get it sorted.
