My baby is rejecting the bottle

I am breastfeeding my 10 week old baby but am also now trying to get her to take a bottle of expressed milk so that 1) she gets used to taking a feed from a bottle and 2) I can have a little freedom and get out and about for more than just a few hours.
I have been trying for almost a month and the only success I have had is a couple of ounces taken after either alot of screaming or much playing with the teat with her tongue. I have also tried various teats and flows.

My husband has also tried to offer the bottle but without success.

Any suggestions?

just bumping for you

I had the same problem at about 14 weeks (even after ds having 1 bottle a day for a few weeks). I tried various bottles and teats with no success. Eventually I left it for a few weeks and then started again. It worked.

Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature is what we ended up using and now he takes 3 bottles a day.

Another tip is to tickle her under the chin when the teat is in her mouth, it stimulates the sucking reflex.

had the same thing. gave my baby a bit of water first between feeds and showed him that its to drink from..took him a few times to realise..but after maybe 3 or 4 weeks when I was ready to start milk feeds thru bottles he took it no problem.
good luck

sorry have no suggestions, but wanted to say that i know how hard it is, and how frustrating you must be feeling.

DD would not take the bottle alongside bf either. She only started to take a bottle at around 10 months, and then stopped bf'ing .

My own experience was that I tried waiting until she was really hungry, also waited until she had just had a small feed, tried it warm, cold, different bottles (spent a fortune!), but for her, she just was not doing it, until she decided she wanted to hold the bottle itself, on her own.

On the positive side, I know there are many people on MN who have successfully been able to feed both breast and bottle to their babies. I hope they can come and give you advice

Oh god I know how you feel! DS2 is nearly 5 mhts and bf. We;ve been trying to get him to take a bottle for ages. Diff bottles, teats the lot. On Saturday DH took DS2 for the day whilst I went out with DS1 so that he would HAVE To take a bottle if he didn't want to starve. He took 1 oz all day (as well as crying and screaming all day - poor DH!!)! He finally took two lots of 3 oz that eve and after bfing him during the Sunday he took similar bottle amounts inthe Sunday eve very easily without a fight at all. THought we'd finally cracked it. Then last night DS2 totally refused to take a bottle and screamed the house down again. Am at a loss as to what to do now.

Hi, I can't offer any advice, but it has been reassuring hearing you all having as much trouble as we have with DS. I haven't tried it yet, but someone suggested getting someone other than me or hubby to give him the bottle.

Good Luck

It took a few days to crack with dd and she would never take a bottle from me - could still smell bm.
You could try a cup, a spoon or one of those bottle to cup trainers? It may just be the feel of the bottle teat in her mouth.
After a nap worked well once she was alert. Hungry but not too sleepy to reject everything except boob.
It is hard but perseverence is the only way. Am still bfing dd at 2 but she had bottles of ebm from 7 weeks to about 9 months then onto a cup
Good luck!

have you tasted the milk?

dd refused a bottle for a while and it turned out that despite being properly stored, frozen etc etc the milk was absolutely rancid.
She's fine with fresh or stuff that's been frozen 6wks or less.
