Did you know that there is now a new National breastfeeding Helpline which has had a hefty cash injection from the Dept. of Health?

It's good to report on something positive for a change eh?

Run by BFN and ABM

Wow, what excellent news - I didn't know it was in the pipeline. I've used the BFN myself many times and am very grateful for their expertise.

Wonder what the NCT/LLL position is? Could they not put diffs/politics behind them and join in somehow to pool effort/resources?

I know there's a long history there but surely a single 'message'/phoneline etc is a good thing? Or am I being hopelessly naive?

I wondered this too.
Although to be fair everyone has got otgether over the breastfeeding manifesto

Nothing to do with politics, monkey - I promise you. NCT would have loved to have one single number with all the bf orgs working together. But what was proposed was something that NCT felt unable to support wholeheartedly because of the very limited money and committment put into by the Govt, which did not (it was thought) allow the single number to be long-term, sustainable proposition.

Currently, the NCT bf line is the only one that ensures a response or a call back to all callers. It took a long time for us to get up to that level of service, and we believe this should be the aim for any helpline. This is not the case with the national helpline, where call response depends solely on whether the number is diverted to someone who is able to answer at that time.Hopefully, this will develop in time, and NCT welcomes the national helpline, as it is another way women can get help.

When I say NCT could not support it wholeheartedly, I meant in the sense of coming in with it....we do support it

lackaDAISYcal · 18/03/2008 18:31

thanks for the phone number moondog; it's not exactly been highly publicised though has it?

tiktok · 18/03/2008 18:35

Daisy, it's probably a good thing it's not on every bus or on tv etc....it would not take much to totally overwhelm the service. Same with NCT breastfeeding line.

Hot cross monkey bunn, The NCT and LLL were included in the early discussions on joining together on this project, but at this time they felt unable to join in - the avenue is still open though.

It was felt that there was a need as many calls were falling through other helplines nets and that people should be able to contact their geogrphical closest helper and NONE of the organisations have full UK wide coverage, but collectively we do.

For information the ABM has loads of spare answering capacity and so far calls to the new number hasn't made a dent.

Unfortunately as may sometimes be the case - two calls can come along together (like buses)and then one can't get answered, but the counsellor then spends the next three days not having the phone ring!

The publicity should come along during breastfeeding week, there were various reason known only to the government why it went live a couple of weeks back and caught most of us on the hop (including the ABM and BfN i suspect).

Still the end result hopefully means that mums will have greater access to good information.

Good point tiktok, I just hope that women know where to go to get the support they need.

hotcrossMonkeybun · 18/03/2008 20:28

Thanks for the info. I do think it's good news but it is true that 150k or whatever it is, is not nearly enough...

moondog · 19/03/2008 08:45

Ben thinking about this.
It's only 5 wages really isn't it?
My local Sure Start nursery has a bigger budget that this just for staff.

Hmmmm......
