Breastfeeding on prozac - looking for reassurance..

I'm on 40mg and our practice nurse just said the only guarantee that my baby was not being affected by the drug was to go onto formula. We are both really enjoying bf and I've worked really hard at establishing it I don't want to give up Can anyone give me any reassurance? xx

What did your doctor say about it?

First of all- good for you in establishing BFing.

What does she mean by 'not being affected by it'???

Prozac can be a bit of a bummer to come off for you, but it unlikely to cause any siginifcant harm or withdrawal symptoms to your baby. If you feel strongly about continuing BFing but switching to a less harmful antidepressant, sertraline is a safer option for breastfeeding mums.

I would recommend talking to your GP (or psychiatrist if you have one). It would suggest that you continue BFing and ignore the practice nurse for now.

Emma (GP. Please don't tell my practice nurses that I told you to ignore the advice of a practice nurse!)
