Reflux... when will it end?

My 11 week old is suffering with silent reflux. All information says it will resolve itself by 12 months. Please tell me that I don't have to wait that long? Has anyone got any hope or advice they can impart? Please.

Have you spoken to the Dr? Two of my six ended up with infant Gaviscon because it didn’t settle

If they’re formula fed a change of milk cansometimes help, but speak to your Gp about it. Definitely no need for the baby to suffer until they’re 1

Hey, he's breastfeeding but DH gives him a bottle a night so I have a break. But he has a lot of symptoms. Generally quite fussy, won't be put down, has a dry cough now and then. Fights bottle feeds. Sick after feeds and gags randomly. Hates being burped. So many boxes ticked. We've got an appointment with DR Thursday so fingers crossed...

Just was reading about it and all the information was saying most babies grow out of it by 12 months and I was thinking god no, please let this resolve soon! I was hoping 6 months

Hello from a fellow mum with a silent refluxy baby who has been sat up all night with her lo. No real advice but just to say I’m with you in solidarity, as this is really rough. Our ds is 9wo and since he was 2 weeks symptoms started to appear. He is so unsettled, basically never sleeps and certainly can’t be laid down (I can’t even get him to co sleep). I can hear him bring milk up then swallow it back down, he’s really congested and gulpy too. He has his jabs and dr check today so going to mention it then… we were prescribed gaviscon a few weeks back but haven’t tried it yet as all I hear is horror stories about constipation. I have also cut out dairy from my diet but I know that takes time! I really can’t go on like this for 12 months😥

3 of mine improved by 7/8 months when weaning onto food. Is the bottle formula? If so could be cmpa. Me littlest one has it and I can eat milk and breatfeed fine but milk directly is a no go yet.

The constipation is a pain, but it’s far more manageable than no sleep I found.

just use as little as possible (we used half a sachet) and ask for lactulose if needed.

if Gaviscon doesn’t work then omeprazole is an option, but they’ll want you to try Gaviscon first.

My DD's didn't really improve until she started with food. She had all sorts but nothing seemed to work until food was introduced. My GP did tell me to give her water to help as long as not replacing a feed with water ect and that did seem to settle it a little. My GP did advise to start weaning slowing at 5 months which I did and even just having the one meal a day to start with really helped. Hopefully you DS will be over it soon I remember how horrible it is! X

cocksstrideintheevening · 08/11/2023 07:35

Dts didn't come off medication until 18 months which is at the extreme end of the scale.

rubbleonthedoub · 08/11/2023 11:44

I took my DS to an osteopath who was trained to treat children.

Resolved it that day

NappiesAndBunFluff · 08/11/2023 13:45

No advice but following along as our 12 week old is refluxy and seems to be getting worse- the not being able to be put down flat, and if you do manage waking up spitting up and choking and coughing. Very tiring having to take multiple changes of clothes everywhere, the mountains of washing and feeling like I'm constantly covered in sick myself, so I feel your pain op.
We've tried gaviscon, but he just spits it straight back out, so there's nothing wrong with his taste buds!

Nikki93 · 08/11/2023 19:28

I’m here in support with you, my 14 week old has had reflux since birth. He was on omeprazole but we’ve recently took him off as he was also being checked for CMPA and we felt like everything was just getting too much for him plus he was getting so distressed every morning taking it that he was then miserable for the rest of the day. Someone has told me to try colief as this apparently helps. Hope your little one grows out of it soon, stay strong!

Ecnerual · 08/11/2023 19:41

My EBF CMPA baby's non-silent reflux improved when I cut out dairy and then a lot about 7/8 months when he started eating more solids and having less milk.

He is 10 months now are we have very few sick ups. I think he still has some silent reflux (he makes a face) but much less. He is still on omeprazole but the dose hasn't been increased since weaning.

I remember searching for the same when he was little and hoping he'd outgrow it sooner, hopefully your LO does soon.

Coconuticelolly · 09/11/2023 08:04

Ecnerual did the omeprazole help much? I’ve cut out dairy and soya and he just doesn’t seem to be getting much better. My little boy’s is more silent reflux (I can hear him bring stuff back up then swallow it down, always in so much pain too, but he only sicks small amounts) so wondering if the medication will help (as gaviscon is a nightmare to give him).

showmethegin · 09/11/2023 17:14

DS had this, I'm afraid OP until around 11 months! It did slow down months 9-11; we'd have a few days with none then it would start again.

We tried gaviscon but he suffered with horrific constipation and it made no difference to the vomiting at all so we took him off. He is chronically constipated in general though so might not affect all babies as badly.

In the end we just had to wait it out. When he was small we found putting a Muslin tight over his sheet helped for middle of the night vomiting as we could just whip it off to reveal clean sheet underneath. Obviously didn't fix him but made it slightly easier to deal with!!

Hi, I know this is an old thread but was wondering how your LO got on since the post. Did he improve? What worked if you don’t mind me asking?
My 12wo little boy may have reflux too, started him on gaviscon but worried about constipation issue:-(.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 14/03/2024 02:04

Our wee ones was awful awful. She ended up on high dose omeprazole. Was at it's worse at 4mo, improved muchly by 7mo, now trial stopping meds at 10mo

Bugs22mk · 29/09/2024 21:26

@Coconuticelolly I know this is an old post but just wondering what your outcome was in the end? My baby has silent reflux and also wondering what I can do to help or whether it will end up being a long time to resolve? Did it resolve in the end or anything that helped?

LittleOwl153 · 29/09/2024 21:35

My eldest (now teen!) Was a bad refluxer.. I think she was 12 months+ when she stopped completely - well into the proper food. She was on Omeprezole from about 8 weeks it did help alot. She was also on domperidone but I don't here that mentioned much now.

It's hard work... the washing... I don't envy any of you doing this now the washing... especially at this time of year!

We propped her up after feeds - a v pillow on the floor (obviously watching her) or putting her cot at a slight angle - books under its legs or a pillow UNDER the mattress. That seemed to help a bit.

They do grow out of it... eventually!

DearGoose · 29/09/2024 21:36

10 months on and still on omeprazole and gaviscon 😬

catsnore · 29/09/2024 22:10

My dd had silent reflux, was worst from 3 to 6 months and started to settle after solids were introduced. We tried gaviscon but made her constipated. Sleeping more upright seemed to help her - in sling or buggy and cot propped up a bit.

CalliopePlantain · 29/09/2024 22:14

We weaned ds at 17 weeks old (under HV/GP advice) and it helped so much with his reflux

Hi @Bugs22mk I was prescribed gaviscon but as LO was breastfed and wouldn’t take a bottle or syringe it was a nightmare to give him, so didn’t really work. I cut out dairy and soya for 6 weeks and he did start to seem better, and at about 13 weeks old I gradually started to re introduce those foods into my diet and he seemed to tolerate it well. I would say by 4 months old he was much more settled… he still seemed to throw up milk here and there and do the worst exploding poos, but definitely did not seem in as much pain, I was able to lay him down etc. TBH I think the main thing that helped was time, which probably isn’t the answer you wanted to hear…. Those 13-14 weeks where he just cried all the time and would only sleep on my chest were the hardest weeks of my life, but it really does get better. I hope you’re doing OK as it’s really tough. But do keep on with your Dr or health visitor. My Lo also had a tongue tie which was cut twice and still grew back, but there are lots of things worth checking out (e.g. tongue tie, gaviscon, omeprazole). Sending hugs 🤗

Bugs22mk · 30/09/2024 12:42

@Coconuticelolly thanks so much for your response . We also didn’t get on with gavisvon as BF. Had her tongue tie cut a week ago and started omeprazole - so will see if either of these have an impact - if not will try the dairy/soy cut out as LO isn’t gaining weight as expected and is now 9th centile. Hopeful and not hopeful at the same time! It’s helpful knowing others experience.

Thefaceofboe · 01/10/2024 18:59

My 1st baby had severe reflux and didn’t get better till she was 10 months, it was horrendous. My 7 week old also has it pretty bad and I can’t believe it’s happening again Sad

I feel for you, it’s awful
