I fed DD on demand til she was two, including hourly at night til she was 18 months
then she started sleeping a bit better so we might weaned easily, and she forgot about day feeding of her own accord, so deliberately stopping is new to me.
DS is just gone 10 months/about to be 11 months/45 weeks/seven weeks off one: however you want to shape it! Basically far past the point of it being worth switching to formula when I can just reduce feeds, but too soon for a cup of cow’s milk where he needs one.
He was sleeping through from six months (v gentle sleep consultant) and thus night weaned because he didn’t wake to feed, not because he was trained to be refused milk in the night, IYSWIM? 8/9/10 month regression hit hard with molars and colds in the mix and he’s now back to one night feed plus sometimes goes back to sleep if there’s a 5am one. (Sometimes gets up for the day
)
Lack of sleep is breaking me, I’m too old for this shit, peri so I don’t drop off easily after the feed which is anywhere from 12-2am, and need to split the nights with DP. Breastfeeding is also exhausting me, I feel run ragged and calorie and water deprived as well as sleep deprived. (DS is wildly active, DD is a rascal.)
Currently he feeds at:
Midnight or 1 or 2am - once overnight only
5am or if he doesn’t wake at 5am, on waking at 6.30
10am
6.15 right before bed
He eats like a horse and has a big breakfast, a snack after his 10am feed, massive lunch, 3pm snack, dinner. Two good naps a day in the cot.
I just cut out the post-lunch feed and it’s not been missed. Should note the night feed crept in before I started winding down day feeds and it has the feel of habit and comfort, not hunger. (Happy to comfort alternate nights with a cuddle! I’m not a monster! I just don’t want to feed any more.)
Does this sound like an OK plan as we approach 12 months or would you do it in a different order:
Once supply settled now I’ve cut the lunch feed, start by cutting the 10am feed and upping his snack - at 11 months
At 11.5 months, introduce a cup of cow’s milk on waking instead of a breastfeed. (I can’t see how two weeks early as a drink is going to be so drastically awful.)
We’re going away for Christmas which will be disruptive but once we’re back, he’ll be one and a week, DP off work, so switch bedtime feed for a cup of milk and night wean at the same time.
Done! It’s almost too simple…
I can’t do it any quicker, can I, as he can’t have cow’s milk now and formula seems pointless at this late stage and he still needs some breast or formula milk at 10 months, otherwise I’d just drop a feed a week starting now. (He LOVES water so hydration wouldn’t be an issue.)
Thank you for reading my essay.
