TMI alert Breastfed baby's poo

Without sounding completely gross how much does your breast fed baby's poo smell?

Mine is quite stinky and always has been - after spending 9 weeks in special care and no one mentioning it being a bad thing I've not really thought much about it.

However finally received my birth to 5yrs book from baby clinic yesterday and it says that breastfed baby poo shouldn't smell.....

Now i'm worried that something is wrong..

What do you think? Is the book right or just a load of crap (excuse the pun!)

my baby is mix fed and his poo honks sometimes. it should mostly be yellow and have sort of seedy bits in it and be soft, sometimes my lo gets a bit of a green one but as long as its only now and again nothing to worry about. When he was exclusively bf it smelt kind of like butter most of the time i think?

Vanderhum · 06/03/2008 21:08

my dd is 4mths and excl bf. she only poos once a day usually and it does smell quite a bit sometimes. i keep thinking god how much worse would it be if she was formula fed!!

MrsBadger · 06/03/2008 21:13

much worse

dd's smells weirdly like bread

BF babies poo does smell but it smells sort of sweet. Should be mustard yellow, if it goes khaki green they are getting too much fore milk and not enought hind milk. It may be as a result of what you eat, onions, curry, fizzy drinks, alcohol for example. Remember when I started weaning proper poo after a BF baby was quite a shock!!

Oh no it does smell. It smells sweet, and not totally removed from the smell of your bmilk. You get really used to it - I found myself missing my babies poops when they were weaned, which sounds ridiculous, but it is a smell completely unique to your child. (I suspect bfed poops of other people's children smells less sweet )

It does smell, but not nearly as strongly as formula fed baby poo or weaned baby poo. I found it relatively unobjectionable as a smell, but could definitely tell whether DS had pooed by giving his bottom a sniff.

Sufi · 06/03/2008 21:18

My DS is bf and his poo changes all the time, in colour, consistency and smell! When he was tiny, under 12 wks, it smelt less vile (kind of like straw or a barnyard... very odd!) but now mostly it stinks! Have been told by multiple sources not to worry when it goes green/changes as, if no other signs of illness, it's just one of those things.

Enjoy you LO now you've got 'em home from hospital! xx

Mine's is really very stinky and always has been, a bit sort of sour yoghurty, not sweet at all. Not very nice but you get used to it.....
