3 week old sick after feeding

Over the last couple of days my 3 week old has been sick after most feeds. He’s a bit more sleepy / not asking for food as much too I think but hard to say (given he’s only 3 weeks!). He isn’t fussed by it at all and it’s just basically milk coming back up. is this normal at this age?? I’m really stressing over it.

I feel like this may be due to the heat wave as he is warm (doing our best to keep him cool) but I’m conscious I don’t want him to get dehydrated so keep offering feeding and he takes it.

He doesn’t have a temperature, I’ve checked twice. he is exclusively breast feed and has gained a very good amount of weight since birth so no issues on this front to date..

would appreciate any advice as quite anxious and not sure whether to call someone!

whats his weight like op?? If you have any concerns I would go and get him checked out. If this is after every feed then definitely go and seek medical help.
I had pyloric stenosis as a baby and was very very ill. At 3 weeks old I would get any persistent vomiting looked at quite quickly. Could you call 111?? Does he seem in distress? Skin tone look ok? Nappies & weight gain? Any sign of distress? Xx

It could be reflux- depends on how much of each feed you think he’s bringing up- but if it’s after every feed I would seek some medical help. Xx

He’s gained loads of weight and is a big baby as it is (born at 10lb). It’s not proper sick just sort of milk that pours out his mouth. Skin tone is fine and he’s in absolutely no distress he’s very chilled and not fussed (which is reassuring me). He’s been having wet nappies and poos all day so no issues there either.

Is he vomiting? Is he posseting? It's very normal to start bringing up some milk and many babies continue to do this at some point after most feeds until 6m+. A way of checking if it's an alarming amount is to measure out 5ml of cow's milk and throw it on a muslin to see if it compares to how much baby is bringing up.

I strongly encourage you to join your local breastfeeding support group. They'll have a what's app or FB group so you can ask for support at all hours from local trained peer support workers.

Sounds like reflux to me. Is he arching his back like he's trying to jump backwards off your lap? That's a song that he's uncomfortable.

The muscle that holds food down isn't yet developed so a lot of babies have reflux aka possets as long as it's not bothering him and he's gaining weight try not to worry too much about it and have lots of muslins to hand. If it is bothering him consistently for over a week speak to HV or GP about Baby Gaviscon or Omeprazole

If he’s mostly settled, gaining weight, peeing and pooing then it’s normal. It’s called posseting.

Sounds like you are doing everything right and have done all the checks :)
sounds similar to my little one it could be abit of reflux… he is still so little so could be that the hole at the top of the windpipe is slightly open and often closes over time…. As it isn’t fully closed some milk can be brought back up.

this is what I was told and it did make sense as the older he got ( 7 months ) the less it happened.

it doesn’t sound like anything to worry about, fingers crossed it sorts itself out :)

I think I’m also stressed because the last couple of days he’s been cluster feeding like mad and today I’m having to offer him food (he always accepts) and he’s a bit more sleepy. I’m hoping this is just the heat

Normal. There is a bit growth spurt around 3 weeks where they cluster feed like mad for a few days then sleep a lot for the next couple of days as a sort of catch up. DC2 is 8 weeks and this happened around 3 weeks and then again at about 5.5 weeks.

Sounds totally normal, and probably cluster feeding and sleepy due to the heat.

Look up the difference between vomiting and posseting for reassurance.
