My baby is so hard to feed, she cries a lot during feeds, she’s 12lb needs to drink 30oz in a day but yesterday she drank 23 and the day before she drank 25, some days she’ll drink the 30oz but others it’s a struggle she doesn’t drink a whole bottle a couple of weeks ago she was drinking a whole bottle every 4hrs now it’s an ounce here and couple of ounces there, she was always hard to feed and would always take absolutely ages to feed I thought it would get better as she got older but shes 12 weeks now and it seems she’s gotten worse she also cries during feeds due to silent reflux which she’s on medication for

Sorry to hear that I’d go back to doc to review reflux meds, she may have outgrown the dose. Good luck I know it’s hard xx

ighmi · 31/07/2023 04:11

Is she a) growing appropriately and b) having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? If the answer is yes then she might just have a lower than average requirement.

What reflux meds is she on? You need to try and optimise the control of the reflux.

Read the bottle aversion book by Rowena Bennet - not saying your baby has an aversion but really useful about bottle feeding in general and babies' requirements.

@ighmi she dropped below her centil but hv wasn’t concerned because she’s tracking but i will have a look at that book

Lollibert · 31/07/2023 22:21

Out of curiosity, where have you got the 30oz from? My 5 month old only drinks 28oz on an average day. 30oz seems a lot for a 12 week old

It's probably the 2.5 floz per pound in weight equation. Much better to feed them in relation to their wright rather than their age Wink

@TeddyBeans a 12lb baby needs to drink about 30oz in a 24hr period today thank God she had her 30 oz which she finished by 8pm followed by 1hr of screaming from colic I think since she finished her daily amount early she’ll probably be hungry again by 11-12ish which I’m happy about as she need to make up for eating less the last 2 days

My first was formula fed and never hit the 30oz mark the whole time she was on bottles. It was very stressful but the longer it went on i realised that some kids needs more to grow and some don’t. She was perfectly happy with the amount she had. I found that because she was sleeping well it meant that she wasn’t hungry and was all ok

Lollibert · 31/07/2023 22:43

@Glitterstars if u don’t mind my asking me for how much did your baby weigh at nearly 12 weeks ??

TeddyBeans · 31/07/2023 22:54

Oh that's interesting, didn't know there was a calculation. Another potentially daft question from me - what weight does it stop?

She was quite small. She was around 10lb

Lollibert · 31/07/2023 23:10

@TeddyBeans not sure I think the higher the weight the more milk they need and I could be wrong but I think the amount of milk stops getting once they start eating solids but someone will probably come and correct me

Six months when they start solids usually.
