EBF and Pumping

Hi,

Im EBF and wanting to pump to build up a freezer stock for emergencies. Anyone have any schedule suggestions?

I’ve also been reading about separating AM and PM breastmilk. What timeframe would you consider an AM pump and PM pump?

sorry if this has been asked already. I can’t seem to find an answer.

I've honestly never heard of this @AtomicFlea. What's the reasoning about that?

The NCT have some great pages about expressing milk and storage.

Before freezing too much it’s worth trying out baby with expressed milk that’s been frozen … mine never froze that well tbh.

Honestly don't worry about am and pm, the milk banks don't and they supply milk to very tiny or sick babies!

I bf easily and for a long time. I could not express for love nor money. So don't beat yourself up if you can't!

As others have said, honestly don’t worry about separating am & pm milk.

In terms of expressing, my DD is 6 months old and ebf, I pump for 20 mins an hour after our first morning feed and generally get between 60ml and 150ml from that.

I think it depends on your baby’s schedule (and your body!). My first fed All. The. Time 🤦🏻‍♀️. The only time I got a decent stretch without him feeding was 8pm - 3am so I used to express before bed about 11pm. My body doesn’t like expressing though so I only got about 60ml a go and had to do 3 sessions to build up enough for 1 bottle. With my second, I’d express after a feed to try and build my supply but obviously wouldn’t get very much then. So don’t worry if you don’t end up getting much.

I never separated am and pm milk.

I never separated am and pm milk. I mainly pumped on a morning as was best time to pump as my son slept through the night and got the most milk. When I kept milk in the fridge before I put it in the freezer i added pumped milk from during the day straight to it. Had no issues.

I am combing feeding formula and EBM now. I would say morning is first of the day and evening is last of the day/bedtime (and overnight if you pump them). The middle of the day I would lump in together. Putting a Hakka on the other boob while feeding and collecting what dribbles down each time works well saves you extra pumping you might get almost a bottles worth each day
