Breastfeeding to bottle (dairy intolerance)

Hi, I’m at my wits end. So breastfeeding a 12 week old boy. 2 wks ago diagnosed with silent reflux & cmpi. His sister has also. I’m off dairy now but absolutely wreaked. He will not take neocate dairy free formula. Switched to mam bottles and he just loses his mind when trying bottles. Trying a few times a day. Eventually give him breast as I’d be all day warming bottles and could take 40 min to get 2-3 ozs into him most of the time he point blank refuses bottle. He does need to go dairy free his skin has very bad excema. I have tried vanilla essence drops in his bottle to improve taste. Any advice please would be gratefully accepted.

I think 2 to 3 Felix is very good.

A BF baby will naturally take 25 floz in 24 hours, so just slightly over 1 floz an hour. If you're managed to get 2 or 3 flip of formula into him at one time I'd count that as a full feed.

*floz not Felix! Blush

Can you get support with this? Lactation consultant maybe?

Do you want to stop breastfeeding? If it was easier, you were getting enough nutrients and rest would it be OK?

If you have been off dairy (and soy) for 2 weeks, things might get better for him and for you shortly..

I am not advising this path.. I am just asking if you had considered this an an option..

Yes I was thinking this well, he took 5 ozs this morn when he woke as I knew he’d b hungry it took awhile to get it into him but wouldn’t settle for an hour or more until he has a quick breastfeed then🤯🤯

I’d head to get some support with the breastfeeding.

the formula is cows milk based, while your milk isn’t.

im a CMPA mum myself and combi fed with aptimil pepti, but my god it would have been so much easier to just breastfeed.

even with other children around there’s lots others can do to support you with that. You can also include them in the baby feeding. I used to read to my eldest while feeding or watch TV together. Also was much easier than trying to make up a bottle for a cranky baby while dealing with a cranky toddler.

there’s also growing evidence that cows milk does not pass into breastmilk unless mum also has an intolerance.

This is incorrect. Neocate is a completely dairy free formula, aptamil pepti is a hydrolysed formula so does contain milk protein.

some babies with a severe allergy do react through breast milk and will need a completely dairy free formula or for mum to cut it out to make a difference.

i can’t help with neocate but my 20 week old is on sma alfamino which is an equivalent formula and I have in the past used a small amount of crusha to flavour it if the vanilla doesn’t work. I totally get the breast feeding struggle, I stopped at 8 weeks for this reason, my mental health was in a bad place and restricting my diet wasn’t helping
