Breast feeding help please- should I preserve ?

Hi! My 10 week old baby has been doing well with breastfeeding but the past week he seems to be on a nursing strike? He feeds sporadically and when he does he gets angry and upset and comes off and on the boob lots of times. Me and my DH panicked and gave him formula when I didn’t have time to express milk but of a night time he is awake most the night - grunting and straining? It’s like formula doesn’t agree with his stomach or maybe it’s because he’s coming feeding?

I don’t know what’s best for him to persevere with breastfeeding or switch to formula?
will I have messed up my supply by adding formula? I’m trying to pump throughout the day to build it back up but how do I know he’s getting enough breast milk???
He gets weighed in two weeks so hopefully we can see but I just need some help! My Health visitor just said to do what’s best for me 🙄.

Please help

🙏🏻

It’s not going well because you’ve confused the situation with bottle feeding.
min my experience you can only do one or the other.

Just feed. As much as you can.

feeding is better than expressing at getting your supply up. A one off bottle won’t have messed your supply up, just keep feeding.

it may be a growth spurt and he’s trying to up your supply by feeding more frequently.

the best way to successfully bf is to breastfeed.

As well- what do you think when you look at him?

is he pink, hydrated, sleeping well? Tears, fontanelle not sunken. Plenty of nappies? If so, he’s getting enough milk.

i think 10 weeks is when my supply started to regulate. Stopped being able to express easily, and they got fussy as the milk wasn’t immediate and bountiful, they had to start working for what they needed 😂

If your baby is producing roughly the right amount of wet and dirty nappies per day and putting on weight he is getting enough breast milk. It sounds like breastfeeding is going well for you, babies are fussy for lots of reasons and it takes a while for them to work out their digestive systems, both mine were grunty and fussy at times.

Breastfeeding directly as opposed to expressing is much more efficient and will keep up your supply. If you want to breastfeed then I would keep it up and avoid reducing your supply by using formula. The Kellymom website has lots of great advice but if you are worried your GP will help.
