Hi guys I have a 10 week old baby and from day 1 I've been struggling with a feeding schedule some days are great every 3-4 hours 3-4oz other days like today it's an once an hour basically sometimes 1.5oz every 2 hours sometimes a wee bit more hours I'm worrying about over/ under feeding him and then I'm thinking he'll only take what he needs but surly at 10 weeks he should be taking 4oz easily. I mean he is gaining weight he is over 10lb. Am i just being a worried FTM and do you have any advice.
Thank you

I think it’s hard to get any kind of schedule for the first few months, from memory with DD it was about 14 weeks that sleep and feeding schedules started to develop. You say he’s gaining weight but is he following his centile line? That would show you aren’t over-feeding or underfeeding. It seems he’s having the same amount and sometimes he’s having that in one go and sometimes he’s having that across a couple of sittings so I wouldn’t worry too much. They also have days when they’re hungrier, usually founding with a growth spurt, but then days when they just aren’t as hungry. Things to look out for on non-hungry days are that he’s still having wet and dirty nappies.

Do you eat the same amount at the same time every day with the same intervals in-between? No? Babies are no different. It doesn't mean anything is wrong.

My DS2 was very much a grazer and ate little and often. He is still like that now.

Be prepared for little and often and go with the flow.

As long as he’s gaining weight and having lots of wet nappies, then you are doing great! My DS was just like this and continue to feed little and often up to 6months when he was weaned. It was frustrating when I saw other babies having their regular 6oz etc every 4hrs but that just didn’t suit my DS.

Follow baby’s lead and you can’t really under or over feed, if baby is otherwise healthy.

As an adult we probably rarely go 4 waking hours without eating or drinking anything (I certainly don’t - I’ve always got a brew with me 😂)

If a schedule feels important then you could keep persevering but baby may have other ideas. I personally could never leave mine crying when I knew a little feed would settle them. (he’s now 5.5yo, a good eater, fit and healthy and a healthy weight.)

Good luck x

Thanks for your replies he has loads of wet nappies but he only poos every other day which has done for weeks and weeks now HV and GP don't seem concerned they just said that's his way as it's not hard ect when it comes out it's normal.

Suppose sometimes he will just be little and often

Mine went through a snacking phase like that around that time but did eventually take larger amounts. You can try the next teat size in case he is getting frustrated by the flow being too slow but most likely he just wants to take smaller feeds at the moment. We eventually settled on a roughly 3 hourly feeding schedule (but flexible for demand) as she would never take very large amounts.
