My local health visitors have been advising mums to start adding/mixing in cows milk to the formula as they approach one until it is all cows milk when they turn one. Also watering down the formula. I am on ds3 and no-one has ever mentioned this before To me it sounds like a recipe for tummy ache.

Any thoughts - have you done this?

Also - I ran out of formula last night so gave ds3 cows milk (10 months) - he wolfed it down much easier than formula and didn't cry afterwards (which he has been doing recently) - he has also been refusing formula feeds - do you think I should change to cows milk?

I can't see why you couldn't. It's cows milk in the formula anyway.

I didn't do it with DS2 - he went straight onto cows milk (out of necessity as we were completely out of formula and had no way of getting some more......he was 11 1/2 months though ). But was also recommended to mix the two to help the swap.

I know a LOT of people that have done it that way and had no problems

Why is it a recipe for tummy ache? It's cow's milk, not gelignite. It's a very good way to get the child to switch without noticing the change in taste - and i would think that if there are ging to be any digestive problems resulting from unprocessed cows milk, best to find out from small doses than one sudden big one!

I did change to fresh milk when ds2 was 10 months old because he wouldn't drink formula, and he has always taken it a lot better.

Surely lots of children like mine are having cows milk anyway in cereals etc anyway from 6 months.

I agree with colditz - can't see what the problem would be mixing cows milk with formula. Tummy ache.....why?

Sounds like a ridiculous faff, though.

Watering down formula prob not a good idea unless the baby is taking a god range of solids.

As for changing to cows milk only at 10 mths, there was a thread about this last week, I think.....worth looking for, anyway.

never heard of that but what a good idea! I am so dim this kind of thing never occurs to me. ds1 has never ever drunk milk since we stopped using the follow on milks at 17 months - he didn't like normal cows milk .

Thanks for your replies - was concerned that mixing formula (I know its cows milk based) with fresh cows milk might turn it or something or create bacteria. Feel happy in knowledge you all think it okay though! I had just never heard of it before or watering it down.

He went to bed with full fat tonight and no screaming or leg pulling up which is great (he had been doing it recently on formula)

He has a really great diet so think he is getting the right amount of calories etc. He has 6 meals a day {{little bloater}} and lots of dairy so hope fully all will be fine.
