PLEASE HELP! I really don't want to stop breastfeeding but may need to because of antibiotics :(

I have a recurring infection that requires a course of metronidazole. This is will be the third time that I need antibiotics and I suspect the reason why it's recurred is because I was on 200mg 3 times a day as I was breastfeeding instead of its normal recommended does which I believe is 400mg 3 times a day for a week.

My dilemma is that I want to get cleared up and take the stronger dose but dd (3 months) is breastfed and I've read that flagyll can cause bm to taste bitter and that baby will reject breast as a result. On top of that, she is also being treated for thrush on her bottom and in her mouth which is clearing up but I know that the antibiotics will make it worse.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Can any of the bf counsellors here help?

The link I posted stated that breastfeeding can continue whilst taking metronidazole.

LadyVictorianSqualor · 01/02/2008 19:49

I'd call the bf helplines, the numbers are on my profile.
FWIW, curry and other spicy foods can apparently make bm taste funny but it never stopped DS drinking it, and IMO formula tastes funny so baby may be fine with it tastewise.

Thanks for the responses.
The blonde, GP says it's bv. I saw two different gps the last two times and both prescribed metronidazole for 7 days at 200mg thrice a day. In both cases, it has either recurred or not fully gone away.

Second gp suggested perhaps waiting for dd to be weaned before having a stronger dose.

Have already tried asking hv and an nct bf counsellor who is suppose to be getting back to me tonight. Fingers crossed.

If your post here on the Breastfeeding1 forum there is a pharmacist who is usually pretty good at answering these kinds of questions - she might be able to help you out

Just bumping you. Did you get an answer from the bf counsellor?

Can't help, boogiewoogie, beyond what others have said here - check it out and be aware that there is very rarely any reason why bf has to stop....some heavy duty tranx and anti-cancer drugs may really not be safe, and the use of other drugs has to be balanced against the known risks of not breastfeeding.

A quick look in the usual places reveals no problem with this drug and I have never heard of the taste thing you mention....but check it out yourself and back to the doc, I think.
