CMPA, reflux, other or both?!

13 week old baby has a miscellany of symptoms but the main issue is that his sleep is now awful (since about 8 weeks) due to extreme gas…. Symptoms don’t quite fit anything so we’re thinking it could be a combination of CMPA and reflux?

— Terrible bottom wind throughout the day and night
— Wakes in pain (pulling legs to chest) after 30-40 minutes, day and night
— Poos are all over the shop - varying colours from yellows/oranges to greens and browns. Usually completely liquid.
— Often diarrhoea (watery) and/or mucusy poo.
— Farts smell TERRIBLE
— Hates being laid on his back.
— Had projectile vomiting in massive quantities for about 3 weeks (weeks 9-11ish) but then it stopped. Was never sick at up until the projectile although I did suspect silent reflux when he was very small…
— Now vomits/spits up a lot still but in a ‘normal’ way.

issues with CMPA are that you’d think he’d be unhappy all the time but he’s generally pretty cheery in the day.

issue with reflux is just that the pulling his legs to his chest implies wind…

would be grateful to hear other experiences and thoughts!!

Mine baby has a cracking personality and is cheery. She still has cmpa. Try them on a cmpa milk and if the symptoms go you have your answer.

@Tabitha888 thanks - that’s actually really helpful experience to hear! He is currently EBF but I’ve just started an elimination diet regardless as I’m at a loss of what else to do.

he won’t take a bottle (I’ve been trying since 8 weeks, still persevering but not much luck) so getting Gaviscon into him for reflux would be hard…

My baby was the same. I was so sick of being fobbed off because he had nice skin, he was growing & he was happy through the day until he pood or vomited I packed a bag took him to the gp & said if they didn’t do anything I would literally go straight to A&E. they admitted him to childrens ward, he ended up having his brain checked because of the strange movements & was eventually diagnosed with sandifers syndrome (basically severe reflux). He used to do a strange wiggle movement then wake up screaming with bulging eyes, projectile vomit, at least 8 explosive poos per day with mucus. He screamed when he pood. He had a really fine sprinkling of tiny spots at times on his tummy. Refused tummy time screamed on lying down. Absolutely full of wind. Apparently this was all normal & it was just immature bowel. Later on I demanded a poo test because gaviscon helped the reflux but he still had poo trouble. They reluctantly gave me a poo sample pot saying they were only doing it for peace of mind because the pictures of the nappies were normal, 5 days later a very apologetic GP called, sure enough blood in his poo. My baby had been in pain & bleeding inside for 5 months of his life because he basically had nice skin. Nothing can make this better moral of this story, demand, get several opinions & don’t give up. Ask for a poo test & a prescription for Aptamil pepti & a referral to a dietitian or paediatrics. If you breast feed go dairy free yourself but it will take up to 3 weeks for improvement. My little one is 8 months now. He’s gone from 2nd to 9th percentile since stopping dairy. He’s a lot more comfortable but still wakes with bum wind so we’re now trying to work out why. Good luck.
