Help - 12mo nursing strike due to illness

Phunny · 09/11/2022 19:37

My 12mo baby breastfeeds morning night and through the night. Recently he has been sick and unable to feed since Saturday. I keep trying to feed but now he won’t even try. Every time I try it really upsets us both. Should I give up? Should I wait a while before trying again? I can’t bear the cries when it seems he wants to feed but can’t or won’t. He also doesn’t like to take milk from a cup or bottle, but will have a little occasionally and does like milky food.

thanks for any advice

If he's that poorly have you had his ears and throat checked by the GP @Phunny?

@PritiPatelsMaker thank you so much for responding. Yes I should have said, we have seen the gp twice. He has hands foot and mouth which has made his mouth so sore, that’s why he can’t feed I guess. But now it is nearly healed, he can eat etc but still not breastfeed :-(

I suppose it depends then on if you want to continue BFing?

If you do, have a read of this from Kellymom on Nursing Strikes and I'd also call one of the BFing Helplines for some support.

Thanks @PritiPatelsMaker I’m waiting for a call back from the breastfeeding helpline, they are obviously very busy. I’d love to keep breastfeeding but it’s been too long now I think :-( thanks for your help though, I appreciate it.

I don't think it will have been too long. Your supply will be well established, I suppose they can give you tips on getting him back to nursing.

Hope you get some good support Flowers
