my ds is one in two weeks. ive run out of formula so for the last 2 mornings and evenings hes had cows milk. i thought it woudl be ok giving it to him a bit early as his diet is so good and i make sure he eats very well with a really good balance of all the different food groups. now ifeel a bit guilty though that i may be doing him some harm and think id better get some formula tomorrow at the shops.... what does everyone else think? i breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months to give him the best start so i dont want to do anything now that may hurt him or affect him later on. hes also had upset tummy today (bad nappy) and i didnt know whether this might be anything to do with it?

both of mine had cows milk as a main drink before one when the tin of formula ran out and they were fine, if it was the milk upsetting his tummy it would have done it straight away not 2 days later

One is just a guideline, it won't harm him to do it two weeks early, I assume he has been having it in cereals etc anyway??

milkmummy1 · 27/01/2008 18:42

yes hes been having organic cows milk in porridge and weetabix most days since 6 months old and hes always been fine. its just that i stopped the formula suddenly and didnt wean him off it. should i have done? am still worried about his diorhea though. am tempted to buy some more aptimil tomorrow. shall i talk to my health visitor tomorrow?

we switched DS2 to cows milk about 2/3 weeks before he was 1yr old. We were away (at a family funeral as it happened) and ran out of formula - gave him a bottle of cows milk and he downed it, thought about it for a few minutes and decided it wasn't worth buying formula for one more month, and then making the transition just a few weeks later.

i DID EXACTLY THE SAME WITH DD2..WAS RUNNING OUT OF FORMULA COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE HER FIRST BIRTHDAY BUT JUST WENT ONTO COWS MILK..HOWEVER SHE HAD BEEN HAVING IT AS A EXTRA DRINK FOR A FEW MONTHS BEFORE.

sorry didnt realise caps was on.

Nemoandthefishes · 27/01/2008 18:51

If I remember rightly..which I might not..I was told somethign along lines of if there is no diahorria or stomach ache then they are ready to have it as main drink..however your ds may have just got a bug as a coincidence.

yes hes had big red cheeks too so perhaps its just teething? will ring hv tomorrow. dont wanna buy a big tub of formula only ten days off his first bday now!

I switched a couple of days after DD's first birthday, I'm sure a couple of weeks early wouldn't make much difference.

DD had runny nappies for about 3 weeks I think, but was perfectly happy and healthy and ate well. I don't think she was ill but rather it took a while for her system to adjust to the cows milk. I wondered about returning to formula but it settled down and now been fine since.
