.....and DF says last night that it's about time he was off it as it's halting his development. Then he went on to say that he's read that it slows their teeth coming through, makes them not want to do things themselves etc...

Tom only has 10 teeth through/coming through, he won't drink out of a cup unless you hold it for him (but we have seen him do it himself), has only recently started eating more lumpier food and doing the whole finger food thing himself.

I only give him boobie in the morning and at night (and the odd comfort feed). He's lately not been wanting his bottle on a saturday morning when i'm at work.

Does continued breastfeeding halt development? It does make sense in Toms case but didn't think it would. I just put his eating problems down to getting his teeth late.

Well, my DD is 2.6yo and is still on the boob. She has all her teeth, can drink out of a cup no problem, feed herself and speak 2 languages. In the light of that I'm not sure what development it's supposed to slow down? You might want to point him in the direction of the WHO/Govt guidelines/Kellymom website to explode a few of teh myths he's got into his head.

If anything I'd ditch the bottle. Not needed at all, we managed to get rid of ours at 12mo and all non boobie milk drinks have been out of cups since.

Who is DF?

He sounds very ignorant of the facts, whoever he is. Everything he's said is utter rubbish!

Agree that you should get some info from Kellymom to show him.

DF = dear fiance. He's been very supportive until now. Maybe he's been talking to the guys at work, put 2 and 2 together and made 5, lol.

I've been thinking of weaning Tom off the boob anyway. Tom wouldn't have a bottle this morning and I tried his cup and he just had a few mouthfalls of milk. He also went to do it himself them handed me the cup. Oh, and he keeps bringing me the nursing pillow, bless.

Why not print this out and show it to your df?

ReverseThePolarity · 14/01/2008 12:55

Oh, and this about myths, some of which he has fallen for by the sounds of it.

To be blunt your DF is talking rubbish. Breastfeeding beyond infancy is normal for humans - how would that halt development?

If someone had said that to me I would be asking them to fully justify what they were saying - I can't even begin to understand how teeth coming through could be delayed by a child's diet?

My own DS is 3.5yrs old & still bf. There is absoluetly nothing wrong with his development and he had all is teeth by the age of 2.

Very curious to know where your DF read this!
