Hi there, I am after some advice, I noticed today my 15week old breast fed baby had thrush in her mouth and have been prescribed Daktarin. I have just read the leaflet and freaked out because it says not to let children swallow it or put it towards the back of their mouths because it is sticky and could cause choking - surely she will swallow an amount if I am putting it in her mouth?. Also I can only see the white patches on the inside of her cheeks is that the only place I put the gel. Does anyone have any other advice to keep thrush away once it is treated? Just another thing too - sorry.... I don't think I have any symptoms of thrush on my breasts Dr said I don't need to be treated - is this right or should I put the daktarin on my breasts too? Thank you.

I and DS had this when I was BF. You both need to be treated. It is ridiculous saying only one of you does. We first used daktarin but it didn't work. In the end what did it was Nystatin drops for DS and the Daktarin for me. I remember reading at the time, but you will need to check if this is accurate, that the best treament is oral daktarin for the mum which goes through in to the breast milk - I think it was the La Leche League who recommended this. However my doctor refused to believe me despite me holding print outs at the time. Hope it clears up soon.

Thanks Weagle after reading up on it when I get home thought that would be the case (that we both should be treated). I will try the Daktarin and see what success we have over the next 48hours - has anyone had success with this treatment??

my dd and I had thrush twice. The first time I was not treated and she was not prescribed a long enough treatment - 3 or 4 days as far as i can remember. Obviously the thrush reappeared a dew weeks later. That time I was treated with Daktarin for 3 weeks and dd with some orangey sirup for as long. It never came back. I made sure I wiped my nipples befire feeding and never had a problem. It should be a long term treatment, even if you think your dd is fine (the white coating clears up long before the germ goes away), keep at it for at least 3 weeks.

my ds had thrush when he was a couple of weeks old. he had both nystatin medicine and cream for his sore bum. cleared up great. if daktarin doesn't work ask gp for this - see if cream is ok for you to use also.

i would use the daktarin on your breasts to stop you being infected too. WHen my dd2 had it - she had the nystatin drops and I had the gel which I would apply after each feed.
