Annoying peoples opinions on Breast feeding

I went for my 6 week check up yesterday. The first crap thing that happened is they made me wait nearly an hour- They know I have a 6 week old baby -I think thats really bad.
Then when I was finally seen the female doc asked me about contraception so I told her I wanted the mini pill for a few months becasue we want to try for another baby in April or May. I asked her what I could do to increase chances of conception when I was exclusively breast feeding. She said oh your baby will nearly be 6 months so you could just stop BF. I said I don't want to stop BF at 6 months and was wondering if she had any advice on conception and BF. She said there is no benefit to BF after 6 months and it just makes you tired. I was a bit pissed off TBH. That is her opinion and she made me feel like BF after 6 months is done only for the benefit of the mother.

I don't appreciate when HCP put their own opinions on to you. I just want medical advice. I also had minor surgery when DD was 3 weeks old and the doc told me if I got an infection I would have to give up BF which is rubbish- at worst I would have had to express during infection and then carry on after. I do not have any problem with FF but I think HCP should respect what mums are trying to do and not say thoughtless things to new mums.

I honestly don't get what difference having a 6 week old makes to the length you wait .. if you had an active baby it might make a difference to how easy the wait is but I wouldn't get stressed about this personally .. doctor's surgeries always make people wait .. roll with the punches

re female doc .. she's actually wrong and you know it, good for you .. I'd print off the WHO advice and send it in to her and copy in the practice manager and ask them to ensure their GPs are adequately trained and to not give out incorrect advice

I would get used to it if I were you: have a nose round some of the old threads and you'll see that all hcps seem to have an opinion on breastfeeding....
If you want to re-educate them about it then do! And come and tell us how they react.

actually - that's not "her opinion" - it is incorrect information and she is giving it to you as though it is proper medical advice.

She is wrong and you could complain to the practice manager or PCT

At least you know what you are doing and seem to have enough self-confidence to do what you believe in - there are lots of women out there who get told this nonsense and believe it.

Do complain, copy to the PCT. Lots of citations on the Kellymom website about benefits of extended bf-ing for mother and child if you want to ram it home for this silly woman.

bollocks. i am not tired and i am still bf my 109 month old son. it still benefits them i believe, apart from a cold at 2 weeks he has never been ill. you keep going. i had my periods back at 6 months and are now regular 4 months on. i could concieve even though i am still bf (though not exclusivley as cm has him in the morning).

Re. conception - I conceived DS2 while still feeding DS1, but he was 15 months old by then and not feeding much at night. I believe that the return of ovulation has a lot to do with the frequency of feeds, particularly night feeds - so if you really want to conceive, maybe night weaning would be the way to go? Might be a bit harsh at six months though.

yes i agree, when i saw my mw shortly after my son was born she said that if you fed every 2-3 hours chances are you will nto ovulate but once yuo start having larger gaps between feeds you increase your risk for eg not feeding at night gives you approx 8 hours in which case you might ovulate. os good chance for you is to stop night feeding, make sure baby gets a big feed before putting him/her to bed. of course once your period comes back and settles to its regualr cycle you are half way there!! good luck. baby dust and all that!

She's only 7 weeks 0n thursday and already sleeps nearly 8 hours in the longest stint at night . One night she even went 10 hours. I was leaking all over the bed.
