Are your boobs different 2nd time round? Paranoid that I don't have enough milk due to rocky start

Hi

Sorry for paranoid post but really looking for advice.

DS is 2 wks old and we had a rocky start to BFing (BF DD for 18 months). Firstly he was unable to have a feed for 9 hrs after birth due to rapid breathing and being in SCBU, then fed not too badly (had nothing except my milk) for a day then quite frequently the 2nd day. I felt my breasts were quite engorged on the 2nd day which surprised me as I had to have a crash section and was told it could delay my milk coming in. 3rd day didn't feed very well and 4th day we were re-admitted to hospital due to infection and he was nil by mouth for 12 hrs then tube fed for nearly 2 days (during this period I expressed every 3 hours). Since then he has been fed on demand.
From day 4 when I started expressing my boobs have returned to normal, no leaking and I don't feel a let down. This is totally different to how they were with DD. I was engorged and leaking for about the first 9 wks and had a painful and forceful letdown.

Does this indicate I don't have as much milk this time round (it's been a really stressful time since birth) or is it just my boobs being able to adjust more quickly this time round? His weightgain has been ok - was 8lbs 12oz, dropped to 8lbs 2oz and when we were discharged from hospital yesterday he was 9lbs 2oz. Sometimes seems content after a feed although think he is like DD and a suckly baby as he is often doing the suckling motion in his sleep.

loucee, my ds3 was born 8 weeks early and didn't have a breastfeed from me till he was at least a week old IIRC. In that time I expressed every 3 hours. Even after I fed him myself he was still in SCBU so I could only put him to the breast for 2 feeds a day, the rest were expressed. Well, after we got home, I fed him for 2.8 years so definitely didn't affect supply!!
IIRC, ds1 was the only time my boobs got very engorged and I got leakage at night etc. With ds2 and ds3 my breasts felt a lot more normal.

It sounds like you are doing very well. I am no expert but I think if weight gain is good and he is having dirty and wet nappies then this is a good indication of having 'enough' milk. Sometimes people don't leak, don't think this shows you how much milk you have IIRC.

Well done, you and your body have done bloody well!

mine were different this time round
didn't grow during pregnancy/breastfeeding at all, milk came in ultra quick, can feel the let down.

first time round, never felt the let down, but they grew massively during pregnancy/breastfeeding .

Have never leaked a drop in 20 months (so far) of breastfeeding

If his weight gain is good and he has lots of wet and diry nappies, it's fine! I bet it is just your breasts have adjusted quick this time - mine certainly did

Leakage / engorgement etc much less evident with DS2 than DS1. DS2 also went to special care after birth, so didn't have a feed for about 24 hours, then I didn't have him with me until about day 4 so was expressing / feeding when they rang me to say he was screaming!

18m on - I'm sat here MNing / eating my bfast / bfeeding DS2

With my 2nd (now 9mths) I didn't get any engorgement or feeling that my milk had arrived
Still got the let down feeling but it went much quicker (I don't get it now and I'm still bf)

As others have said if your baby seems okay, lots of wet and dirty nappies and the weight is going up then you are most likely fine

thanks everyone. He does have a dirty nappy pretty much at every change albeit sometimes just a small amount.
