News! HV bollocks GP on BF advice...

Went to docs today just to get DD2 checked out as she hasn't pooed in about 4 days now, which she has done before, (DD1 once went 10 days), but she keeps having screaming fits every few hours and refusing to feed so wanted to check everything was okay.
DD2 is 13 weeks.

Anyway, GP says I should maybe give her some water or some form of laxative (!) or maybe take some myself to help things along (yeah, just what I need with a toddler and a baby, the unpredictable runs), but he said he would call in HV to see if she could add anything.
HV comes in and says I absolutely must not give her water, or anything, or change my diet and proceeds to lecture GP on why lactulose is the best thing for her and as long as she is getting wet nappies and is happy and alert at times then I should just BF as often as I can. She also said that if I need a break I should express and under no circumstances give her formula if I feel she may be constipated as it will not help. (which I knew, but nice to hear!)

GP thoroughly chastened, me sniggering, HV stomps off tutting at him....

Wow - quick grab that HV and dip her in gold, she's a treasure!

Bed the doc wasn't happy?

ChirpyGirl · 03/01/2008 16:11

She has been a bit crap and vague in the past as she was new when DD1 was born but I am pretty sure she has recently been on a course as all her advice for DD2 has been spot on!

Doc is new GP to the practice and seemed to actually be listening and paying attention as well! I love my surgery! I now live 4 miles away from it and refuse to change!

Good for the HV but she wasn't surely recommending lactulose for a 13 week old baby? The worst, not the best, thing for her....surely?

The GP is daft, and fancy thinking you taking a laxative would get into your baby in enough quantity to make a difference....stoooooopid.

ChirpyGirl · 03/01/2008 16:13

Was it not lactulose she said then? She said lact...something but I was only half listening as DD1 was throwing raisins at the door at the time!

She meant breastmilk only anyway....!

I thought that was a typo tiktok - I hope so!

Good for the HV though - clearly a diamond.

Infants sometimes are given lactulose, as it happens, but a very young baby should not need it unless there is clear evidence of constipation, almost always in a formula fed baby.

Giving lactulose to a fully bf baby who is almost certainly not constipated would, ok, not be the 'worst' thing, but it would not be the 'best' thing either.

I think she prob did say that, Chirpy, and that she's not as great as you think she is

ChirpyGirl · 03/01/2008 16:30

lackadaisical?

ChirpyGirl · 03/01/2008 16:33

I don't think that can be what she meant, she did say something like
'lact(whatever) is the best thing and all she would need so just BF on demand as you have been and it should all be fine'

Tis possible she got confused though as it was baby clinic day and there were about 20 screaming infants in teh next room waiting to see her but the basic message was good!
(don't take my lovely HV feelings away!)

My breastfed baby didn't pooh for 10 whole days once. I was told that they could sometimes go for a whole fortnight without a pooh and it wasn't constipation- just normal.

Anyway, 10 days worth of poohs all came out at once when I met a friend for lunch....nice.

PrismManchip · 03/01/2008 16:44

lololol at 'dip her in gold'

ChirpyGirl · 03/01/2008 16:46

Tell me about it speak2deb, when DD1 went the first time it was like a horrorfilm, and she was in the car seat at the time while I was driving!

The last tiem DD2 did it was only a few days and it filled 3 nappies in a row. This is why she is back in dispies as of today until it 'clears' as I still haven't go the stains out of the wraps from last time

Chirpy, I am sure your HV is lur....vley!!

whomovedmychocolate · 03/01/2008 17:16

Could have been lactase? Who knows, I'm sure what she meant was the lovely milky sugars in BM would sort your baby out.

Oh and I had a magic porridge pot baby too! nothing for days and then it would just overflow her nappy, up her back, into her hair and once (during a twenty minute car journey) I turned round to see it overflowing her shoulders and down her front

In retrospect it was funny though. Sort of.
