4 week old not latching after TT cut

DD had her tongue tie released last week and since then it's a nightmare getting her to latch. Her tongue tie was 100% so it needed to be done, but it feels worse now and I'm starting to get stressed. She seems to unlatch after feeding for a while then thrashes about with her mouth open crying. I move her between breasts where she just repeats the cycle.

Does anyone know if this is normal after TT? Will she get the hang of it? I'm currently having to give her a bottle if expressed milk in the evening when the latch is worst, but i had to use the bottle to feed her this afternoon as she wouldn't latch. Now desperately trying to pump for this evening but starting to feel like this isn't worth it.

Hey,

Yeah this can be normal, they have to re-learn how to use their tongue. Did they not check the latch at the hospital after it was done? When we had DS' cut I had to feed straight after and they observed to check all was good before we could leave.

With DS it took around 2 weeks to see full improvement and now he's spot on bless him.

What I'd suggest is if you can, get into bed with LO for a few days, loaaads of skin to skin and just offer breast as often as possible, she should get the hang of it and hopefully if there's lots of skin to skin and you're both calm and relaxed in bed maybe she'll be more likely to latch? You could also give her a little bit of expressed milk, or even formula (maybe 30ml) if she starts getting stressed just to take the edge off any hunger, then offer the boob.

Sounds like you're doing an amazing job so far though! Ultimately though don't feel guilty about moving to expressed milk/formula if that's needed too ❤

@Jurassiclover thanks so much for your reply, it's really helped. She wouldn't latch this morning so after 1 hour of trying and her being hysterical, she had 50ml expressed milk and then was happy to latch and finish her feed on me. Some feeds she will do fine and others not. You've given great advice, thank you.

They did check her feeding and she had latched perfectly after the procedure, it's just gotten worse as the week has gone on Sad
