Very short but frequent feeds........will it affect my milk supply?

DD was not well last night and we ended up at the out of hours doctor at the local hospital. She seems a lot better now, but just wanted to ask in case this goes on the same tonight.

DD fed for very short periods of time about 5 to 10 minutes (Usually feeds for about 25-40 minutes) only staying on the breast for 2-3 sucks and then coming off and 'dancing' around the nipple IYKWIM, then going back on again for 2-3 sucks. She did this from 6pm last night to about 5am this morning.

She has since had a 40 minute feed (at 9.30am) from one and a 10 minute feed from the other.

If DD is the same again tonight will this start to affect my milk supply?

Also if she only feeds for a few minutes then comes off and wants feeding again 10 minutes later do I put her back on the same breast or do I offer the other breast?

How old is she ? Once feeding is established you'll find your body will cope with short term blips in the same way as growth spurts create more supply within days.

What does the midwife say?

Occasional very short feeds bobbing off and on wouldn't be a concern, but if it was most feeds, then it would be. Seems to me that all night doing that needs a midwife's input, though the fact she has started to feed more normally might indicate that all is well now.

You ask which breast - not really crucial in the scenario you describe. Main thing is that with a new baby, both sides get used relatively equally and frequently over 24 hours.

Tiktok, DD is 4 weeks and 5 days old today, she is not normally like this, only last night and early this morning.
I am also expressing breast milk for me to freeze.
Breastfeeding is going really well and DD is putting on lots of weight 15ounces in 15 days from the last time that I got her weighed.

She threw up loads again at 12 0 clock, so I fed her again but she only fed for 5 minutes again.

LIZS, how long does it usually takes to get feeding established?

I think offical advice is at about 6 weeks as that seems to be when the most rapid period of growth spurts subsides so demand evens out for a while and your supply is more robust.
