My first message on netmums so haven't got the hang of the abbreviations forgive me - have had a lump in one breast that the GP checked out at 6 week check and said is a blocked duct - but I still have it now at 11 weeks and can't seem to get rid of it. Has anyone else experienced this? it does seem to get smaller after feeding and when I have gone at it with a hot towel a few times. Have to admit have been slack following peoples advice with massage and dipping into bowls of hot and cold water etc - it doesn't hurt and I haven't had any fever type symptoms.....just beginning to worry as it seems to be staying with me longer than expected....

sorry have no experience, hope i gets sorted, but this is MUNSNET not NETMUMS!!!!
I know it seems just a little point but it won't go down well here

KITTYmaspudding · 21/12/2007 23:55

shit, typo hell meant MUMSNET. Right it's tooooooo late going to bed.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 21/12/2007 23:55

Is your bra pressing on one particular bit?

bookthief · 21/12/2007 23:58

Have you been back to your GP about this? I don't want to scare you and I'm sure it is a blocked duct, the fact the GP thought so and the fact that it gets smaller makes it sound like it.

Please get it looked at again though as it hasn't gone away. Always worth following these things up

MerryLittleCarrotmas · 22/12/2007 00:13

Lots of tips for you on this blocked ducts thread.

Although, if none of that works I'd be cautious and get a second opinion. The fact that it isn't painful and hasn't changed in 11 weeks would make me want another checkup. Please don't worry. Better to be safe.

MUMSNET sorry! great start to my Mumsnet experience! sorry thanks for advice - bra is big baggy bravado that needs updating but this is my 3rd DD so haven't found time to go and get measured up - too bad and baggy to be blocking? and it does hurt now as I have messed about with it before going to bed - hot bath and massage - so woke up with it a bit sore! But yes will definately get it looked at again and get another opinion - just wanted to know if anyone else had one that lasted.....

ah your third dd - I'm b/feeding my third dd as well - this time I've had the odd blocked duct - cleared quickly though and mastitis! Though that was caused by a very busy day and not feeding her through the day after nights of heavy feeding so lots of milk building up...nothing like this with the other two

Must be a thrid daughter thing

Likeasow · 24/12/2007 15:37

I think so - a general exhaustion thing? she did a few long stretches at night so I ballooned - then we all got ill and she has fed and fed at night and not too bothered in the day same as you - but have got lump down to pea size with hot 'Mr Happy' (those bruise soothers) stuffed in my bra so am a bit happier.... {fsmile}

welcome to Mumsnet Likeasow...i found running a wide toothed comb over the blocked duct helped loads. also, either pumping or hand expressing exclusively if it is too painful to feed from (mine was.)

Thank goodness for this thread. I'm having trouble with blocked ducts so have been haunting the Mumsnet threads for advice on similar problems. My bra now contains some weird kind of salad, cabbage and olive oil. I think my problem stems from getting a kind of phobia against feeding DS from my right breast. Have had awful sore nipples and then started to pump from that side instead of feeding. I now have blocked ducts. I'm pretty peed off that I did that now instead of working on a latch (can't get that right either) .

Likeasow · 03/01/2008 20:07

Aah - its a right breast thing - mine were so so sore at the beginning and right was always worse....someone told me that even when you have the latch right some babies just suck in a certain way that makes things sore and can cause blocked ducts. Mine is still coming and going (the blocked duct lump) - warmth seems to work sometimes....[grin}

I'm a blocked duct zealot.

I still get em at least once or twice a week but am now a practiced expert at "pinging" out the plugs before they develop into anything. It's a dubious achievement, but one of which I am proud.

Likeasow · 03/01/2008 21:18

I am a bit envious as I never get the plugs...or can't see them to ping them - would like the chance as am a bit of a spot squeezer

TMI alert

sometimes a great deal of, er, squidging one's nipple between fingers and thumb and peering very very closely for microscopic plugs (smaller than blackheads) is in order.

I used to think I didn't get the plugs at first, but now find them most of the time.

But then, one of the very first telltale signs for me is slight sensitivity in he nip during a feed, even before I can feel hardness of the milk backing up.

My sympathies if you never get the strange satisfaction of pinging out a plug. It's worryingly fun.

I swear, I could write a book on this.

NorthernLurker · 04/01/2008 01:04

I had mastitis on the right side - been ok since thank goodness - that is a bit grim about the plugs - but I think i'll have a quick look tonight anyway

MerryLittleCarrotmas · 04/01/2008 01:36

squeeze and peer, m'dear, squeeze and peer...

Likeasow · 04/01/2008 10:08

off to squidge and will let you know on my progress! perhaps I have had them all the time and haven't seen them....

Just thought i would mention the infamous Silverette here as they worked wonders at quickly soothing and completely healing me within 2 days.. and there are a few other mums on here that would swear by them too

Likeasow · 06/01/2008 19:45

thought I'd heard of everything but that is new to me...
