Infant Gaviscon and Constipation - breast fed baby

My 5 month old DS has reflux and has been on Infant Gaviscon for about a week. He also started on solids three days ago (just a spoon full of baby rice in the morning). He seems to be very constipated. He just squeezed out his first solid poo but was crying in pain and had a lot of trouble getting it out and it had blood on it. I hear Gaviscon can cause constipation but think maybe he may need some water in his diet now that he's on solids. He's completely breast fed otherwise. Does anyone have any advice about easing constipation or ideas for alternatives for reflux?

i would leave off the food TBH, and just get him on plenty of breast milk

also, gaviscon is notorious for causing constipation so would speak to your doctor about alternative treatments

my DS had silent reflux and gavsiscon caused him so many problems - two drugs he had (ranitadine and domperidone) were brilliant and within a week he had really settled down

Thanks for your comments. I was thinking I'd lay off the food too.

Hi,

Gaviscon caused constipation in my LO with reflux but did also helped him. On balance his constipation symptoms were so bad I decided to stop. I had given him the recommended after each feed dose but eventually only gave him it at night (around 8-12 weeks)

I have since heard of several people who used cooled boiled water and orange juice diluted 1/10 to help the constipation and one post where a laxative was prescribed (lactulose).

My LO has been weaning for a month and has gone through a constipated stage similar to the Gaviscon experience. Things have improved considerably on giving him cooled boiled water and pure fruit juice.

Obviously breastmilk is good for fluids as well as food and may be the first choice but may be wrth considering the water/juice.
