Can you get mastitis 6 months after stopping breastfeeding?!

Stopped breastfeeding dc3 6 months ago. She was 15 months and at the end only taking a very short feed first thing in the morning. No problems with engorgement at the time but the last few days one breast has become more and more painful and feels hot to the touch. I can still express little bits of milk which is horribly discoloured (sorry). I had mastitis once before when dc2 was only 4 weeks old so I recognised the symptoms, but could it be that now or must it be something else?

Does it always need antibiotics or can it go away on its own?

I thought all this baby stuff was behind me now....

I had mastitis and a few breast abcesses a good few months after stopping breastfeeding so I would say yes it's possible! Given it's so near to xmas I would get some anti-bios to knock it on the head.

Oh great. Thanks weegle, will call the GP. What do they do about abcesses?
