How many oz of formula does your 6 week old have per feed?

ds is 6 weeks old, was 6lb 5oz at birth, now 8lb 10oz so gaining weight well. He was on 3oz every 2 hours (going about 4 hrs through the night), anyway he started going every hour and a half so we upped it to 4oz and he started going about 3 to 3 and a half hrs between and about 6hrs at night.
Anyway this was fine but the last day or so the times in between feeds has started geting shorter again and is wanting fed every 2 and a half hrs, so, gave him 5oz last feed and he drunk it.
Just worried about giving him mor and more and him getting too much.
How much does everyone else feed theirs???

I seem to remember from the distant past that the suggested amounts are 1/2 an oz of milk per lb of baby.

If the baby weighs 8lb give 4oz.

So your baby would need about 4 1/2 oz.

hello my dd is 5 weeks and takes 4/5oz per feed. she varies on times though. 3-6 hrs depending on day or night. i have upped the amount of formula i make when she regularly starts draining bottles.

Do we have to worry about too much?

I'm thinking unless hv tells me she is a porker I'll just feed when she's hungry

oh thats helpfull thanks, only thing is, am i being really thick here or is there no way to make 4 and a half oz? you know how you have to use the scoop to measure it? should i just therefore make 5oz and let him leave 1/2 an oz if he doesn't want it?
Yeah SC - i think he's got a long way to go before the hv will say he's a porker in fact he's a tiny little imp, thats why i can't understand where all the milk he gizzles goes!

ds1, 7oz, ds2, 3 oz. Both around 8 and a half pounds at birth. The little weirdos.

Some babies drink very little and thrive. some babies drink loads and demand more on top. I don't know why. They're weird.

Make up an ounce more than the last bottle he drained. I always put an extra ounce into the last night feed - because ds1 always drank it.

So, if he drains 4 oz bottles, make 5s, and make a 6 to give him on the feed before you go to bed. He might drink it, he might not.

Completely with Toastedteacake on this one. Give your baby half his weight in ozs. If over the pound mark then offer him the extra oz. Therefore, if he's 8lb 10oz I'd say he should be on 4.5oz feed, five times a day, but make 5oz as sometimes he'll take more and sometimes less.

I'd make up the formula to the next full oz, then if he wants he can leave it, and if he takes it all and drains the bottle then you know to make up more next time.

Have to also admit to giving my baby number 2 feed for his last feed before bed at 10pm.... This will probably get me hung by some people but it bloomin' worked.

6 weeks old is usually the first real growth sourt - it may settle in a week or so...

i see, will try him with 5oz feeds then and then he can leave 1/2 if he wants, will se how he goes on that and maybe try the extra oz at bedtime in a few days

they have growth spurts so need more during this time. I just feed my DS whatever he wants and he is happy.

yeah i sometimes find it hard to spot if he's having a growth spurt... are there certain times when these are more likely eg 'x amount of weeks'?

6 is usually the first one...then perhaps at 11/12. You could ask your HV as they should know.
