If I give my 1yo 2 BFs a day, will he need more milk on top?

I'm going to keep BFing DS past one year, but vaguely wanted to drop down to just morning and bedtime, so that in the daytime I don't always have to be around (expressing has never really worked for me).

Will the 2 BFs a day give him enough milk so he can have water/juice in the daytime? Or will he need some kind of milk in the daytime? He is allergic to cow's milk so I guess it would have to be some kind of soya formula, if he did?

Since she was about 11 months I have been giving DD BF morning & night - I replaced the afternoon feed with a soya yogurt which she still has now at 15 months.

Haven't had any issues - phased the daytime BF out slowly - only giving if she demanded it - probably took about 2 weeks to dissapear.

Having said that DD is not petite so I don't worry too much about missing calories iyswim

Hi MegBusset.

I asked my HV about this as I am doing the same. DD is 13 months and I breastfeed first thing in the morning and at bedtime.

She does have milk otherwise - yogurt, in cereal, or as a drink, but I don't worry too much about it - my HV told me twice a day was enough and not to give any formula on top of this, just water as most of the calories should come from food now.

In fact, when I was still feeding four times a day at 10 months my HV actually wondered if this would stop her from eating enough as she said that was a lot of milk for this stage (she didn't need to worry, DD could eat for England!).

Hope this helps!
